Speaking of participation awards...

I've noticed that a bunch of my 5K races have medals just for finishing. I take mine, wear at the event, get home and toss into the heap of others. I'm not one of the top runners, and it's just 3 miles. A medal?? The best thing to receive at the end is "good job!" And high-5s from my running partners.

@AverageJoe This generation has NO self esteem and has to have boosts every chance they can get.

But these runs are not "this generation". They are multi generational.

And the ones that don't do medals, I hear NO griping, not even the younger ones.

I wonder if it's the parents who THINK their child needs the participation awards.

I've seen very few cases of children being upset about not getting a medal. In fact, I've only seen the meltdown from some of the special needs community.

Some parents are confusing (IMO) normal sadness for not winning with self-esteem bruises.

If I ran 3 miles it would be one hell of an accomplishment. I'd want a medal. Heck, I'd want one if I ran 3 feet.

I received hand written letters through the mail when I was a race director of a local 5k from people in their 70s on how there should be more medals in their age group. We ended up adding more age groups at the higher ages because of it.

I think Everyone who is over 70 who completes a 5k should get recognition.

like maybe a gift card for Midwest Orthapedic, lol.
