Smartphone screen repair

Has anyone gotten their smartphone screen repaired? I'm trying to decide whether it's better to repair it or buy a new one. The phone cost $180 and is a month old. I'd expected this to cost $50 or so, but the one quote I've gotten so far (from IFixGadgets) was for $180. Looks like Normal Gadgets in Peoria is gone now, so not sure where else to check.

There is a cell phone repair place in East Peoria in the strip mall between Subway and Silver Bullet. I forget the name of it.

They replaced the charging port on my phone for about $40. I was debating getting a new phone or getting a separate charger and spare battery.

Central Illinois Phone repair I hear is good and reasonable. I've never used them myself. They are behind Wendy's sunglasses shop on Knoxville across from Avantis.

I replaced a screen myself with a kit from ebay. Follow the directions and take your time and will turn out ok.

Screen in a DIY project as long as your slow and take your time. Be careful with the ribbon cables. Will be at least one screw hidden under a label most likely in battery area,

I have an iPhone 5s and the battery is shot. I can get a new battery for $8 but I watched videos and doubt I could do it myself.

Every shop I contacted wants at least $75 or more to replace the battery. I can get the same phone new for $99.

So I ordered an iPhone 7 plus. Verizon is offering $400 trade-in on my 5s even though it's not worth anything close to that. But I'm locked into 2 more years Emoticon

@EyeintheSky :

I'm sure they will. I likely would have been a Verizon customer anyway but I still hate being tied into a contract.

I compared Verizon's prices to the other carriers and the small savings with the others wasn't worth the switch. So now I'm locked in for 2 more years.

Batteries Plus charges $125 to replace the screen. At least that was the going rate earlier this year. I've been told by techie friends that if you plan to do it yourself, buy two screens. They almost always broke the first one but got everything right the second time around.

@radar_99 Dang! I'm going to go talk to Verizon. I get a $300 quote for my trade-in over their website for my 6s Plus in pristine condition. I'm still debating upgrading...or not. Can't justify it but I'm a sucker for better cameras and that one is an improvement.

I'm leaving Verizon when my contract is up. Either going to Project Fi or Walmart's Family mobile.

Illinois has one of the highest tax rates on cell plans in the country. In Chicago, it's over 25%. Some of our neighboring states aren't even 15%.

I probably should have renewed my plan in Colorado rather than Illinois.
