Double standard/Hypocritical

I was reading some posts on Facebook this morning about a few local Veterans who have received code violations on their properties (overgrowth, peeling paint, etc.). Yet if you travel in the 800-1300 block of East Kansas and East Arcadia, the cobblestone streets have potholes large enough to lose a small child and weeds growing far enough away from the curb that they are no longer the homeowners responsibility.

I would really love to file a code violation against the city for these. They expect the citizens of this city to keep their properties all prim and proper, but it is OK for the streets to look like this. If I were selling my house in these two sections of Peoria, I think I would be suing the Peoria government for hurting my property values.

I think I will go take photos to post and send to City Council. Can we sue the city for failure to "maintain safe streets"?

@RambleOn
YES people can sue cities. It has been successfully done in other cities seeking a turnaround.

@RambleOn I went to Kroger today via Arcadia. Someone has weedwacked a good section of the north side. Don't know if it was a person(s), homeowners, East Bluff effort or city. I don't travel that section of Kansas anymore because I don't want to risk damage to my car and I don't have my 4-wheel drive vehicle insured for the winter yet......

Actually, somewhere I think I have a video of driving east on Kansas towards Prospect I took last year when I had the 4WD out.

If they want slow traffic near Main & University, they should have kept the old brick streets! Just on spot on E. Kansas.

Photos, along with an invite to drive our historic brick streets, has been sent to 3rd district councilman, the at-large council people and a couple of others at the city. Let's see if I get any response.

I live on a small hill with no curb or sidewalk on our section. We have major runoff erosion on the side of the street at the edge of the pavement like a foot deep. The city will do nothing.

I did hear back from Tim Riggenbach, 3rd District Councilman. He forwarded the photos to several more people at the city who are in a position to make decisions. The CSO issue may actually help in making the decision to preserve the brick streets.

@joepyeweed I can see the city in a conundrum. Bricks streets are too expensive to repair "properly" and it's too expensive to properly re-pave. In my experience, cities only keep these up in small areas where it's historically imperative to do so.

Also heard back from Beth Jensen and one of the Community Development people I sent the photos to. Both of them forwarded it on!

One month ago I got one of those famous orange stickers for my trailer in the yard......
No big deal........ 40 feet from where the sticker was stuck to my door this pile of garbage has been there. Tomorrow looks like its time to clean up.

Be careful what you ask for. The folks on the city council might up our property taxes again for more "street repair". (This is what they did earlier this year).
