Here is a great article in the Wall Street Journal by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. Leslie, would love to know what you would have to say to Megan Sampson, Wisconsin's first year "Teacher of the Year" who was laid off the very next year because of her lack of seniority. Just you and her. Go ahead. Talk to her....what would you say? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704132
The follow up: According to district officials, Sampson was laid off by MPS on June 30. The district attempted to recall her in August, after resignations and additional funding opened up teaching slots.
She declined the job offer from MPS, and is teaching English at Wauwatosa East High School.

Not sure I follow you. None of that changes the fact that one year she was teacher of the year and the next year, union rules called for her termination. It's great she landed on her feet (people like that usually do) but that doesn't change the facts. What if she wasn't lucky enough to find another job? I'm sure they aren't all happy endings....
Btw, I googled her too cause I wanted to send her a FB friends request. I had already read that stuff about her. For purposes of this discussion it is all irrelevant. |

This is my last post for the evening...
"Budget cuts called for her termination". Did you just fall off a turnip truck? Do you really think that States and the Federal Government can maintain their current levels of spending? Of course there have to be budget cuts. What part of deficit spending don't you understand? She was terminated because, regardless of the fact that she was doing an outstanding job teaching children, the union contract made it mandatory that it be her in particular that was laid off. Was that action in the best interests of the children in the school district? Pick YES or NO. Imagine she was the teacher for YOUR child. These policies do nothing but encourage mediocrity. "Union or not most shops/businesses have the last in first out policy." That's your argument on their behalf? It's OK because they all do it? So if your representative turns in bogus expense account receipts, is it OK as long as they all do it? You're slipping. |

OK I mean it this time!!
"What in the hell does my representative and expense reports have to do with this? " It's called an A-N-A-L-O-G-Y. "If we don't make education a priority who does? " You can have education as a priority and still make cuts. Throwing money on a problem does not solve the problem. |

And it will still be hard to recall Walker...there's more of a chance to recall legislators...
540,000 signatures is a lot of signatures to get in 60 days...and if I'm not mistaken, they must be registered voters in Wisconsin |

SO, when it comes to spending cuts, the GOP in WI thinks the best way is to fire people? And that Payroll cuts will lead to a better budget??
Oh, ok. Good thing the US is ranked like 16th, in the world, in education. Let's fire more teachers. |

How many other Teacher's besides this one got laid off? I think District 150 does the same thing, lays a bunch of them off and then rehires them before school starts. The story is really about education cuts and not unions.

I think the system is flawed in many respects. It's crazy to lay off and keep hiring teachers. Many layers of failed leadership, selfishness, and mismanagement have created those conditions.
It's impossible to work through and ultimately resolve these issues, however, when your elected representatives, instead of staying and developing a persuasive case for change, simply flee the state. Those people should be ashamed, and they are the ones to blame for how this ended up. Absolutely ridiculous, irresponsible behavior, and if they were allowed to succeed itwould have effectively ended our democracy. I have full confidence that the average joe on the street will see it that way as well, and any efforts to recall the Republicans will fail. The cowardly, fleeing Senators, not so much. I'm shocked to see that otherwise bright individuals don't see it that way. |
