Wireless Access Point
Dec 22, 2011 - 07:42 am
So, I just upgraded my home stereo receiver and it has a LAN connection. I wanted to get this feature so to stream Pandora, Slacker, or tunes off of my PC.

However, Where I'll put it doesn't have a LAN drop, so I thought I would get a wireess access point to connect the receiver to my WiFi network. I bought a TEW-637AP, and didn't realize until I opened and started to configure it that I bought the wrong thing.

Any techies know of anyways to 'hack' this to do what I want?

Thanks!

http://www.trendnet.com/downloads/list_subcategory.asp?SUBTYPE_ID=1342

See the English user guide on this page. On page 23, it explains WDS and setting this to act as a bridge, which relays data from this router back to your main router. Your main router must also support WDS (most do), and both must be configured properly.

This may be more trouble than it's worth. A more preffered product would be something like this:

http://www.netgear.com/home/products/hometheater/net

If you can send back the Trendnet, I'd do that and get a device specifically designed for what you're doing. And I'd get a product that matches the manufacturer of your current main router, eg if you have a Linksys router, get a Linksys WET610N bridge, etc.

I already opened it, so I'd have to dig into Newegg's return policy

So WDS mode should allow this to provide network access to the tuner?

Also, I might keep it regardless since I realized our wi-fi blu ray in the family room and the wi-fi tv in our bedroom are both wireless n and my current router is b/g and is in the basement. This device should help boost a stronger signal up to our bedroom.

Should, BUT if the tuner is trying to get an IP address via DHCP, you may have to tweak some settings to allow that request to pass thru to the main . If everything is setup perfectly, it should work. Could be a major PITA though.

My main router doesn't support WDS, but the WAP does. The router supports bridging, so I tried to bridge the 2 so to use the WAP as an wifi extender, but couldn't get the 2 to talk... Maybe I'll just go get one of those hard-line network adapters that works using the home electric wires...

Does your main router have a firmware upgrade that might add WDS capability? It's probably still easier to go a different route, but thought I'd throw that out there.

It does, but the release notes do not mention anything about adding that functionality. v8 of my router did have a firmware update that added this capability. Mine router is v10.

I like the looks of that device you posted. I found a similar device w/ 4 ports, which would be nice because there's also a network ready blu-ray player at the same location as the tuner.

I found this guy, but it says it's for gaming. Any reason you can think of why it wouldn't work for my receiver, too?

I don't see why it wouldn't, they both have similar specs, the media device touts quality of service prioritization, which is better suited for streaming. If the price difference is nominal, I'd go with the media bridge. The media bridge also says it will do gaming systems if you choose to add one down the road.

I figured out a better alternative. One that didn't cost me any additional money (well, $5) and I was able to do now!

I realied my kids old desktop, which we haven't had setup since July, had a wifi card in it. I took it out of his desktop and put it in mine. Then I moved the DSL model, wifi G router and new Wifi-N router behind the TV/Receiver/Blu-Ray player. I had already routed a phone line there for the Satellite receiver. So, I had to get a phone line splitter to split between my satellite and DSL modem.

Now my new receiver and Blu-Ray player are on the net.
