Some people will be miserable no matter where they are.
I hope your friend enjoys his stay in Peoria. Try this link: www.peoriachamber.org |

Just in case you were talking to me Dave, I am not miserable at all. I didn't know we weren't allowed to make jokes, though.

PeoriaIllinoisan writes: Those who can't find something to do here either have no clue what is available or are the type of people who can never be happy, no matter where they live, always thinking the next move will bring them joy. Good luck with that. OR, we've actually lived places that are TRULY happening.... Serious, this is like home now, but it's really not a hotbed of activity or history or anything like that. |

what i don't like about here is that everything seems to shut down by 10 pm...unless you're a drinker.
what i DO like about here is that there's always something happening every weekend. except in the winter. everyone seems to disappear then. |

Well, no, big concerts don' come here, there's no beaches, no pro-sports, no real museums or art galleries, or booming night clubs, etc. You'll never see Lollapalooa or Ozzfest here. The Sky chiefs are not the Cubs.. The river is not Lake Michigan Face it. This is a hick town. You find what works for you and Peoria is cool, but seriously, compared to Chicago?? C'mon.... |

I would take them to see two things:
First- To Richard Pryor Place, so that our global traveler could see how one of the most gifted comedians of our times is honored (or dishonored) by his native town. then: On to Martin Luther King Drive, to see the African American Family, that fell from President George Washington's loins, to which the Washington Estate claims: "He ain't tha baby daddy". For additional Information, Google: Mr. West Ford. -The One Stop HOME Shop |

That's a new one One Stop. What's the story behind that?

I guess it is where you are from. I lived on Hilton Head Island and it was a party every night. The place was alive 22 hours a day. there would be lights set up on the beach and we'd be playing voleyball at 2:30 am next to a keg of beer. I've also lived in Longview, NY where the highlight of the week was TAKING your garbage to the dump and looking out for black bears (right, Hip?). I think in any city, though, you get used to it and take it for granted. Imagine if you lived in a place like Longlake all your life and came to Peoria. YOu would be amazed at all the things there are to do. Many years ago, I visited relatives in southern Germany. We were heading to Switzerland for the day. I was so excited at the opportunity to see the Matterhorn. My cousin says "huh, the Matterhorn...its just another mountain." We didn't go. I have friends in Indy and they take having TWO Trader Joes for granted. So while Peoria Heights has one of the few water towers in the world you can actually go up in, we take that for granted. Yes, we have no Cathedral of Ulm or Devil's Bridge or El Arco at Lands End or a Matterhorn. But how many places do?

Excellent beaches less than 3.5 hours drive, concerts, museums, zoos and lalapalooza 2.5 hours from here. Ozzfest c'mon, I don't think even Ozzie likes that turd anymore. Most of what you could ever want is a day trip away and for 1/3 rd the cost of living and no daily hassles with 1.5 hour commutes ect. Put high speed rail in from here to Chicago and my god even the overfed luddites around here may be able to be transported to Chicago in an hour or so.

The housing is 2- 3X what you spend here... groceries and the cost of living are higher and the traffic is enough to make you go postal! Anything you can do in Chicago you can do here, albeit on maybe a smaller scale.. but that's OK with me.
