The way I describe it, and the reason I went to Occupy Peoria a few weeks ago, is that the gov't is no longer 'for the people'. Our elected officials, of both parties, have been bought and paid for by lobbyists. They write the laws and make sure they pass and those laws are for the benefit of Wall Street and big corporations. I want my gov't to represent the best interests of the people and sometimes that is at odds with what is best for Wall St or a Fortune 500 company...but that is not the way it is happening now.

I am not anti Wall St, anti business, nor do I want to 'take the rich people's money'...I just want the focus of gov't to be on the people's best interests.

Interesting! Sounds a LOT like a paper I just wrote for my English class- I'll cut/paste for the review of the firums- Should I be a protester then??

First of all, "gov't" is a compilation of people that have been elected by other people. If you don't like what the "gov't" is doing, blame the electorate. I'm tired of the bitching and complaining about how "government" isn't representing your best interests but yet the electorate, primarily the same people, continue to vote the status quo, defend it and support it at all costs. Illinois is a textbook example. What have any of you done personally, other than bitching on this forum, to stop this destructive cycle and the corrupt "leadership" in our state, and for that matter in our country?

I don't remember exactly but I don't think that is how you felt when the tea partiers were protesting...

I have volunteered for numerous campaigns and causes that I believe in...including putting signs in my yard. You're welcome.

Good answer, and a good start. Now hold these people accountable!

If they don't follow through on their campaign promises, vote them out! I think we both know where you can start.

Constantly being updated, this blog is keeping up with the "Occupy" rap sheet. Up to 204 incidents. Sure appears to be deteriorating into anarchy.

This is precisely it. JFK said it and the liberals of today pass it off as tertiary.

The new motto of the left is "Ask not what YOU can do for your country, but ask what your country can do for YOU" (or anybody wealthier than you can do for you).

My own opinion of OWS is that they are mostly a bunch of marxist, douche bag hippie-type pussies trying to experience or re-experience the 60's like it was a "cool" era. You know the type. The same type that protested and booed the Vietnam POW's as they were returning to America after the war.

Yet, most of them probably think of money as evil to begin with and that is exactly why they don't have any. They act as though they have no greed within themselves at all yet their whole protest is based on their own degrees of greediness.

Fu'em. Have another toke, aholes, and move to Greece or Italy or any of the other PIIG countries that are in trouble due to socialism, a 35 hour work week with a 6 week paid vaction and a 56 yr old retirement age.

Hell, my own dad worked til he was 74. And he didn't even want to retire even then. What a bunch of pussies.

Wow! shifty, what a stupid, ignorant question. If you can't answer that question for yourself, I don't know what to say to you. I mean I can answer it for my self as an American citizen. I can't answer it for you.

So what do you think YOU should do for YOUR country, if anything?

What do you think JFK meant by it?

Bull****! False generalization and rhetoric.

Liberals take those words very seriously.

You people think the OWS is about "give us free handouts" and that's not it at all. That's you buying into the rhetoric spread from both sides of the coin. Unfortunately, the real OWS'rs are being almost infiltrated by theses leeches that found a group to latch onto and try to bring about this 60's style anarchy, which has nothing to do with the movement, itself.

Most of what the OWS is about is a restoration of the "American Dream" if you want to call it that, where everyone has an opportunity, not to become one of the uber-wealthy, but to have a better quality of life from fair taxation, better job prospects and the ability to comfortably retire having raised their families and sent their kids to school, but those opportunities are waning due to job flight over-seas; as the big business owners get richer and Washington takes their payoffs by the obscene amount of lobbyists allowing this to not just go on, but to escalate.

All caused by Manufacturing leaving the US.

It's not the "uber-wealthy's" fault that the US has become a nation that expects ever increasing wages and the redistribution of wealth.

There have always been the wealthy, wasn't an issue until the Age of Entitlement began.

The American Dream existed with "uber-wealthy" in the past, they just worked for it. Now people want to sit back and GET not Earn.

Its not as simple as there have always been wealthy. Though true, todays wealth structure resembles more of the monarchy's of the past. We have a ruling class manipulating the government to favor them. The rest of us are just serfs, paying taxes to the kings.

Please look at this chart:

Seal, you're so wrong, it's not even describable. Try reading into what people post for once. No one said ANYTHING about entitlement, you just attach that to every thing. I can't believe you didn't drop a Messiah bomb in there, too.

What erks the status quo so much is they cant put a "Label" on this group. They want to attack them but cant pin down one solid cliché to use - without a acceptable "Party Label" - "Racial/Socio Label" how can they be discredited.

The purpose of their stand is clear - to educate - to raise awareness and to encourage others to see the built in inequities of our Political/Governmental/Socio Economic systems.

Like the students of the 60's/70's - they are making their voices heard. They are asking us to look a head - to see where we are headed. Are jobs being created - is the middle class and below being given an opportunity to lift themselves up.

Who allowed the factories to decay, be dismantled and sold off? Who is slowly chipping away at the security of the American Dream?

Every working class family See's and lives the uncertainty. How long can we "tighten our belts" - how long can we pay for the band while others dance? Wheres our tax breaks and incentives?

Stop looking for reasons to tear them down - start realizing most of us quietly feel the uncertainty of the American Dream.
