Ubuntu Windows Installer

Thought about adding a Linux Partition as a dual boot, but the installation looks a little sticky for you?

Try Wubi. Couldn't be any easier

My question is, is this a true dual boot with Linux, or is it Linux running in a Windows environment, aka a VM?

Ok, I THINK I have this figured out for Dual boot wit h2 Hard Drives.

I THINK I have this right, but before I go forward, I just want to make sure that I'm installing this on my D: Drive correctly

Now I have 2 500gig WD HDD's. C: Drive has WIndows, duh, with 150 gigs free space. D: Drivehas 350 gig Free

SO, if I have this right, I want to open Disk Management and free up about 130 gigs on D. Drive, leave unallocated

Boot into Linux Setup, choose "Something Else"

I SHOULD see:

/dev/sda
/dev/sda1 NTFS 104 MB
/dev/sda2 NTFS 465066 MB (Total) 132500 (Free)
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdb1 NTFS 335076 MB (Total) 162160 (Free)
Free Space 130000 MB

Select Free Space, click Add Set as

Primary
Partition Size: 500 MB
Select Beginning
EXT2
Mount Point: /Boot
OK

Select Logical
Partition Size 10000 MB
Beginning
EXT4
Mount Point: /
OK

Logical
Partition Size 16000 MB (I have 8 gigs RAM)
Beginning
Swap Area
OK

Logical
Partition Size: 104500 MB
Beginning
EXT4
Mount Point: /Home

Change Device For Bootloader to sdb

Install

Boot to Windows, open EasyBCD

Add New Entry
Linux BSD tab
Select Grub 2
Name: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Add Entry

Edit Boot Menu
Select Windows As Default

Reboot. Pray that the boot menu shows Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Have fun with that. Hope you don't have anything important in Windows.

The easiest way to do it is pull your Windows drive, load Linuxs on the second drive, put the Windows drive back, then use the Bios to tell the computer which drive to boot to.

Personally, I've found dual booting a complete waste of time and effort. You essentially have to turn off your main system in order to toy around. And then, oh ****, you have to reboot Windows to get something you needed, then shut down Windows again to get back to toying around. What a PITA. Run a VM inside Windows instead, much easier.

HipKat, I got your message. Let me know if you need help.

Easiest Way, (Even though I currently dual boot on the same disk) is to install on 2 separate disks, and just use the util bcdedit to add a boot option for the linux drive.

Don't use EasyBCD or any of those gui editors, just complicates things.

I'm off to play Sins of a Solar Empire. You should give it a try hipkat.. :D

bcdedit.. hmm, ok, I'll have to look it up, although I have edited GRUB in Linux before to remove old versions and make Windows the default

yeaaah, i'm with 1ITGuy. i don't really see the point in dual booting... run one as the primary OS, and any others virtually. what practical reason could you possibly have for a dual boot?

First thing that comes to mind is limited system resources.

Gaming comes to mind second, if you wanted to use Linux as your primary OS, running Windows in a VM isn't very gaming friendly. I've read they'v made some progress on it.

This is true. I looked into using the Wubi to install in Windows and resources are reduced by quite a but. Besides, once I'm on the Linux side, I don't need to switch to windows to get anything. I can still see both hard drives, browse the web, etc

Huh? You mean you're actually dual booting between Ubuntu and VM, or Ubunto is one of your VM's?
