Anyone take Topomax, twice daily? I'm very hesitant to take this drug, as it's not w/o side effects, but am considering it. Headaches cause my Meniere's symptoms, and Meniere's causes headaches. last two days have been difficult. This one is the preventative medicine... the other one is for when one comes on anyway, but I forget what it's called.

I have a friend who takes this drug. She's never felt better. A side affect is loss of appetite. She's lost 40 pounds. In fact, many physicians will prescribe this drug as an off label diet drug. I know they had to carefully and slowly calibrate her dosage. Same if they take her off of it.

That is a seizure med YES the side effect of loss of appetite is very strong. My son takes it for seizures and lost 20 lbs in a month.I use a diuretic (go pee pill) for my meniere's symptoms it help some just have to remember to drink ungodly amounts of water. Wife takes imatrexs for migraines that @#$% is some powerful stuff. Ask your DR about a diuretic WAY less side effects.

@EyeintheSky, what else do you do for your Meniere's? my dizziness is still pretty mild. I hope I don't progress to drop attacks quickly. My hyperacusis flared up fierce this week. I had just been saying that my stress level was so high I was starting to unravel, and boom... flare-up.

How long have you had it? I started with H in Nov., dizziness started in Jan.

I've had the ringing and static in my ears for decades. The dizzy started about 5 years ago. You are right about the stress induced part. I've had a couple of drop to the floor dizzies. Mine is like riding merry go round at WARP speed. Only had a couple so far this year usually just STAY down until it stops last time went 2 days. I've researched the "cures" and most are worse than the symptoms like going deaf. My biggest is light and noise when in flare up I will go find dark place and turn on fan to drown out ALL sounds. What really sucks is I don't get to do any kind of rides they just trigger it. I have looked into biofeedback there is some success with it as well as mediation but they are not going to help a lot in a full spinout session.

I haven't had those yet (vertigo). hopefully what I am doing now will avoid that, but I think that's wishful thinking. I know the measures I am taking can't hurt, and are recommended for managing MD, so come what may... I'm doing what I can. I totally eliminated the alcohol, and keeping a low sodium and caffeine diet. I can do better on the caffeine, as I still have my cuppa joe.

The stressors must be endured... I am trying my best to deal with them the best I can...

as far as being in a room with a fan... my hyperacusis won't allow for that. I have a ceiling fan in my bedroom that makes such a low noise, I have to hold the pull string and feel for vibration to determine the "off" position.. is it just slowing down, or is on low? But, when H is raging, it's deafening.

btw, I saw @EBvexed's comments about diuretics and gout... good to know! I had no idea. I've never had a chronic condition before, so never needed to know these things.

@AverageJoe: Being CHRONIC SUCKS. The only problem I run into is for the most part I look OK and can do most things on some days BUT when something like the meniere's or gout flairs up I am totally wiped out of life. Some folks don't understand that and think you are faking or trying to pull a fast one.

@EyeintheSky,

I msg'ed my doc and told him I wanted to stop taking the Topamax. I'm on 1/4 dose and I'm already feeling the tingly fingers and feet, and I haven't slept for the 3 days I've taken it. I never went to him for the headaches, but he thought since I do get headaches, and it acts as a diuretic, might as well kill two birds with one stone.

He isn't even the doc who treats for Meniere's.

so, yaaah... this isn't the right path for me.

@AverageJoe:

I would personally avoid Imitrex there are far better medications out there, in my experience anyway. Maxalt is far more effective for me and has NO side effects. The version of Maxalt I took dissolves under your tongue, I know there are other varieties.

I have used my nitro tabs for headaches a couple of times they work REALLY FAST the side effects are pretty rough though. It will wipe you out like running a marathon then you sleep for hours.
