I don't see why anyone is shocked with this ruling. California's Supreme Court ruled that Prop 8 was an amendment and not a revision to the state's constitution. If they had ruled it was a revision, a 2/3 vote of the house would have been needed to put the issue on the ballot, I believe...thus throwing out Prop 8. It had nothing to do with whether the court agreed with Prop 8 or not.
The court also ruled that the 18,000 same-sex marriages that were conducted are still valid.
Closer to home there are also two bills in Illinois, HB 2234, which would legalize civil unions in Illinois. Also, HB 178, would would provide for marriage equality in Illinois.
