I agree to a certain extint. Your stating outside. Your definition is not clear enough. At the saint patricks parade the guy smoking "outside" was blowing smoke right at my kids. This is not ok. Now if your referring to in a designated smoking area such as a beer garden which is designed specifically for smoking thats something different.

At the parade, as long as he was more than 15 feet from a door or window, he wasn't breaking the law.

This by far is the dumbest logic I have ever seen I believe. When was the last time you put someone in their garage witha pack of smokes and they killed themselves. NEVER. This is seriously like comparing apples to oranges.

I was pointing out the similarities between the two, in terms of toxins released.... the car, obviously is a bit more deadly due to it using up much more oxygen within the enclosed area, although outside the vehicle exhaust is far more safer than cigarette smoke, which does pose a much greater societal risk.

a cigarette is a 1/4 inch and burns for 7 minutes an exhaust pipe is 2 inches and burns for hours if you let it. new law non smokers who want to complain about people smoking outside must now wear a space suit. there debate over.

I've never smoked in my life, and don't particularly care to be around second-hand smoke. Yet somehow I was easily able to avoid second-hand smoke before the ban. Do you know how I did it? This may shock some of you. I went to non-smoking establishments. Yes! There were lots of them, too! No one ever held a gun to my head and forced me to breathe in second-hand smoke, nor did they force me to go to a bar or restaurant that allowed smoking.

So, really, the law the state *should* have passed was one that made it a crime to force people to go to restaurants/bars that allowed smoking. Anyone caught forcing some poor non-smoker against his/her will to go to a smoking establishment should be arrested. If a non-smoker puts himself in harm's way of his own volition, however, then he only has himself to blame.

Constant exposure to 2nd-hand smoke is bad, but there is no solid science backing it up in smaller doses. That doesn't really say much, considering ANYthing can be bad if you go overboard. Moderation, small doses, you're usually okay.

I agree with Chef Kevin. It's a ridiculous law and should be up to the business owner. If you choose to eat / drink at a smoking establishment, then you're putting yourself at risk.

The space suit comment just seemed a bit extreme. I'm not a smoker, but have several people I enjoy hanging out with that do smoke. It's my choice where I sit and whether or not I want to be around them. But, I will say, I appreciate the courtesy that some take in removing themselves from a group to have a smoke or making the effort to turn away when exhaling. As a non-smoker, I appreciate that. I'm adult enough to know what smoke and secondhand smoke does to my lungs and yours, just as lack of exercise, a bad diet and stress does to our bodies. It's a choice..

So, what you are basically saying is that it is OK to harm someone so long as they consent to it?

Well said indeed! BTW, I am a non smoker also. Tried it once, we didn't get along. I don't see the point in it really.

By the way, it isn't just Indoor smoking that the law prohibits, it is always smoking by door ways, which is something I have an issue with. There have been several instances where I've walked out of a building, designated No smoking by the owners just to walk into someone smoking in the path of egress, I guess I should of been aware of the smoking and jumped out a window instead.

I think that was you i met at the chili party. when i lit up i moved down the driveway away from everyone. if more smokers where like me you probably wouldn't have a problem, but when iam sitting in a beer garden outside siting at a table by the fence and some whiner walks by crying it does wear a little thin.
