Leslie, I think that these folks are driving a tad faster than conditions allow & their cars just sliiiide. They probably try to correct incorrectly & in the ditch they go.
Remember, turn INTO the slide.

I am sure I was driving to fast this morning...there were only a few cars on the freeway and I wasn't near anyone. If I had to change lanes I just took my foot off of the gas to slow down then changed lanes.

I try to keep my speed down anywhere from 5 to 10 miles slower than normal & keep back about 2 car lengths from the car in front of me. Even with the damn good tires I've got you can still slip & slide.

Be careful out there! Don't drive if you don't have to.

SOUTH PEKIN —

A woman died Wednesday morning after her pickup truck slid on the ice near South Pekin, sending her into the path of an oncoming semi.

The accident occurred about 7:25 a.m. on Illinois Route 29, just north of South Pekin. The pickup was headed north when the driver lost control and slid into the southbound lanes, hitting the semi head on. Authorities say the ice was very heavy and slick.

The driver of the pickup, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Pekin Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to Tazewell County Coroner Dennis Conover.

The semi driver was also taken to Pekin Hospital, where his condition was not available.

Or fly...

The freezing rain caused problems for travelers on the ground and in the air Wednesday morning.

A plane slid opff the apron/taxi-way at the General Wayne A. Downing Airport Wednesday morning as it was trying to make its way onto the runway for take-off.

The aircraft got stuck in the grass with 36 passengers on board.

Peoria Airport Director Gene Olson says a shuttle went out to pick up the passengers. They are now waiting to catch another flight.

Olson says conditions are good now. But, when the freezing rain first started, the runways were closed for an hour so crews crould apply a chemical and sand to improve traction
