But we all pay for it, almost everyone drives, 1/10 of one percent of miles traveled are by train- no way to pay for it unless it is almost all subsidized.

1/10 of the miles are traveled by train because that is all of the train their is...if there were more train routes people would use them!

There used to be more train routes and people didn't use them, that is why there are fewer now.

Or the government spent a bunch of money on highways in response to lobbying by automakers, such that the rail system couldn't compete.

The trains don't compete because of convience. You can't go anywhere anytime on a train. That is why the people use cars more than trains.

LOL. Exactly. Which is why we need high speed rail lines dedicated to moving people between large metropolitan areas.

Right. That way when you get to the city an hour faster than you could have in the comfort and privacy of your new cash for clunkers car, you can spend an hour in the rain and $50 hailing a broken down old Crown Victoria with a bad suspension and 235,000 miles on it, riding to your final destination while the driver speaks endlessly on his bluetooth ear thing in a foreign language. And all this for only a couple of billion more tax dollars? Count me in!!

I'm on the fence about this. I'd like to see something between Peoria and St Louis, which I make frequent trips.. That drive is rough.. although if Av8R would fly me down there.. I could jump off the fence and oppose it..

What is so hard to understand- We're BROKE, we have NO MONEY, We cannot AFFORD IT. We are borrowing money from China TO PAY OUR BILLS.

If we could afford it, it would be great- but right now we CANNOT.

Now before you Libs get into a big tizzy about Military spending, let me say right now- our government has been on a spending drunk for WAY too many years, and it needs to stop. This is MY money, the government is stealing MY money at an increasing rate to buy billion dollar jets for a war that happened 20 years ago, the government is stealing MY money to give to people who refuse to work, the government is stealing MY money to fund corn subsidies, and I am DAMNED tired of it.

The European rail system will not work here, everyone has cars, and mass transit is provided where it is needed.

Oh, and a flight from Chicago to St Louis? 156$ Round Trip-

What do you mean it's your money? Isn't it MY money too? America is so far behind on transit and being green it's not even funny.

WHY won't the European rail system work here? Because you don't like it? I don't buy that argument.

Because people in general don't like mass transit at all. Watch the local bus', 95% of the people there wouldn't be if they had cars. They ride it out of necessity, not desire.

Quite the opposite, whenever we go to Germany, we LOVE taking the Bahn. It won't work here because we don't need it- as I said in my earlier post, everyone has cars. Why sit on a supposed "high speed" train when you can take your own car and have transportation when you arrive at your destination?

I see... So your guys' explanation of why we don't need it, and why it won't work, is because we have cars. In other words, the "lower class" are the only people that use public transportation.

Just another reason to vote for it as far as I'm concerned. You're sick of the government spending "your" money; I'm sick of people thinking they're better than everyone else.

Whether we are behind in transit or not, we can't afford it. It would have to be started from the ground up. The tracks that already exist can't support high speed trains, and even if they could, there are STILL going to be low speed freight trains on them. Any idea what the cost of running all new tracks that are suitable for high speed trains is going to be? WAAAAAY more than we can afford right now. Secondly, I have to agree with Ron and a few others, I simply don't believe enough people would use it to merit the cost. Too many other things to work on, right now.
