Who remembers when downtown Peoria was where mother shopped on Saturday? There was no mall or K-Mart. None of the stores were open on Sunday. Bergner's and Block and Kuhl were in direct competition. World Drugs, Hecht's Bonnyie Shop and Kresge's were all downtown. So was Cohen's and Byerly Music and a dry goods store. Sealtest made the best ice cream and the meat packers were still on SW Washington. A & W was on Prospect not far from the zoo entrance. Caterpillar foundry in East Peoria was operational and so was the old lift bridge on Franklin Street. It replaced the wooden bridge fondly called "old toothpick" - the first to span the Illinoiis river to connect the two counties. The first McDonald's opened on University not far from the first Ford dealer. You could buy a hamburger, fries and coke for less than 50 cents. Life was not nearly as complicated then. Caterpillar didn't buy the first main frame until the 60s.

What do you remember?

I grew up on Farmington Road, but I don't remember a Drive-In out that way. There was one in Bellevue, but it was "adult" features.

There was a root beer place in Bellevue. Not far from that drive-in. It's possible it wasn't an adult drive-in until later. Both of those were on Plank Road though.
I remember driving into Hunts and dining in the car. The Peoria Drive-In. Shopping downtown. Staffords Dairy. The HUGE candy counter at Szolds.

I'm sorry, I think I meant Sandy's when I said Quicks. Wasn't it Sandy's first? Then Quicks?

Mr. Quik? Not sure if that is what you are talking about? I thought it was MR. Quik?

I thought there was a drive-in out rt 150? and wasn't there another in town..off of Lake? I believe there are houses and a Church there now, but for some reason I remember a drive-in. I also remember going to the Varsity theater and sitting upstairs in the balcony area. I was too young too drive. I think that was where Campustown is now.

I also remember going to cruising Main Street back and forth in high school and going to Stage 2.

I grew up in Metamora, so I don't have too many memories of Peoria that far back.

I think youíre right SAHM, it was Mr. Quick but I get confused because we still have a Mr. Quicks in Florida and I thought I was just mixing them up. Regardless of the name, Iím pretty sure it was Sandyís first. I remember the theaters downtown not at campus town.. but only two Iím sure there were more. I donít remember any drive-ins here in town either.

The drive in out 150 was the Holiday and also there was the Pioneer drive inn. I remember everything mentoned so far and also : The Spartan Store, Belscot store, Arlen Store, Piggly Wiggle grocery stores, A & P Grocery, Lowstein Furniture downtown, Bishops Cafeteria, Kramers before Jumners even when it also had drive in, when Caterpillar would put a huge Christmas tree up in East Peoria by one of their plant, Mary's Resturant on N Adams, when the River Station was the train depot and we would go pick my Aunt up when she came in from Chicago for a visit and the tail end of the steet cars or the tracks all over town from them.
