Do the police in Peoria normally stop traffic for funerals? Just got back home and from Wisconsin to University (driving on Forrest Hill) the police were at the side streets. Knoxville and University were very backed up. So, is this normal or did someone "important" pass away and the funeral was today?

So, the police stop traffic for everyone's funeral?

Not that i'm aware of. Not at any funerals i've been to here. Could have been a retired offcer or some other "honorary".

Or a local drug dealer that never did anything wrong in his life.

50/50 on the funerals I have been to, depends on the size and the route taken to the body dump. A funeral director could tell you what it takes to trigger the escort.

What To Do When You Encounter a Funeral Procession
Just remember that funeral processions have the right-of-way. Here are some additional Do's and Don'ts on how to handle a funeral procession that passes through an area where you are driving: •Do be respectful. •Do yield - once the lead car has entered traffic, such as going through an intersection - the entire procession will follow without interruption. Even if their traffic light is red and yours is green, you must stop and allow the procession to continue through the intersection until all cars in the procession have passed. •Do look for the last vehicle in the procession - it typically has 2 or more flags and a hazard lights flashing. Once it passes by, you may resume the normal flow of traffic. •Don't cut into or cut off a procession. •Don't honk at a car in a funeral procession. •Don't pass a funeral procession on the right side on a highway, unless the procession is in the far left lane. http://www.funeralwise.com/learn/procession |

Might have something to do with the size of the procession.
Although now that I think about it, very rarely do I see funeral processions around Peoria. In Chicago they were pretty common -- the procession went from the funeral home to the church, and then to the cemetery. |

I don't think it's common, but I wish it were. Someone start a pet peeve thread and I'll be all over it with rants about cars passing and cutting through processions.

those same damn inconsiderate people would have a" rolling over in their own casket fit" if anyone even thought about being rude on their funeral day. those damn inconsiderate people are probably the same ones who throw a fit when an ambulance, fire truck or police with lights and sirens blaring makes them get over to get out of the way.

I Was present, also, and, yes, it was a long procession. Iwas touched by it. Remember, there have been some very senseless murders lately, and tempers flare. It was apparently a black family's memorial to a fallen family member. Also, that is an extremely busy intersection at that time of day.
