I think you need to rely more on your Buddhist philosophy, it could have kept you out of trouble?

Would a Buddhist even defend themselves against violence or attempt to press charges?

If you had truly relied on your Buddhism in that very touchy situation, you would have walked away or remained silent when the negative energy was mounting.
