Gee, I guess somebody else has never been to the southwest United States, huh.

so it would seem. And depending on where in the Southwest you were, I may or may not agree. Tex-Mex border food is awesome. The **** they serve in Albuquerque is horrible. Much like the **** they serve here in Illinois.

I'm definitely gonna try the place in Pekin though, since I'm living here for the time being. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm not sure where you were in Austin, (and this is going to sound way vague because it was 13 years ago and I don't remember names.. forgive me..) but my fiancée at the time.. and I were down there for a wedding. There was a DIVE-looking place of a Mexican restaurant across the street from our hotel. But we're were told to go there for tortas, tacos de lengua, ceviche and menudo. Now, I'm not a fan of menudo.. but I dig the rest.. And this place was AWESOME. It was strange in that they only had 8 foot table seating inside.. so you sat with whomever, but everyone was so busy stuffing face that it wasn't like we were having conversation. I couldn't have, even if I wanted.. not a lick of English in there. Luckily, food is easy enough to order.

I have no idea if that would meet AV8R standards for 'authenticity' but the only other place I've eaten food like that is from a tiny hole in the wall place off Ridge and Broadway, when I lived in North Chicago. And they had THE BEST corn on the cob!

My rule about food places is the crappier the building the better the food. Awesome example here in P town on Wisconsin across from Glen Oak school. There is this Mexican joint that has the best, fattest and cheap pulled chicken tacos.
