They say they will peak at least a week earlier, so the Stark County mushroom fest is being moved up to the last week of April.

Has anyone done any shroom hunting yet and if so, what are conditions on the ground?

I contend that it's not "hunting" if your prey cannot run and hide! It's like calling Nascar a sport. If middle-aged fat guys can do it, it's not a sport.

What would you call it then? Mushroom searching? That sounds like someone lost their pet mushroom and now cant find it.

I've seen more than one FB friend's photos of laundry bags half-full. They are in full-swing.

Is it illegal to pluck them from local Peoria Park District properties?
I imagine Detweiller, Glen Oak, Robinson and several others in the country.. might have some good hunting. There are also some parks north of town.. I forget the name of the park, but I think it's out off Trigger Road and Dickson? There is a cemetery out there too.

I know last year there were a lot of them along the Rock Island Trail near Dunlap. I ride out there a lot and there were a lot of people finding quite a few morels.

I can tell that you have never gone. They do hide. You can be standing right on top of them and not see them. I like to bring children with me when hunting because they are lower to the ground and can see them better.

I found about 3 pounds yesterday. I gave half to my sister and the other half we ate with dinner at my parent's house.

Its a pretty good find for this early in the season, even with it being so dry. Some of the shrooms were so dry - they felt like paper. If we can get some decent rain, it will get better. However, we are going into a series of cool nights this next week, which should slow them down some...and hopefully extend out their bloom season.
