John Roberts' Vote

This is an interesting take...it looks like Roberts may have switched his vote at the last second...
Rumors had been circulating in legal circles for weeks that Chief Justice Roberts in particular was under enormous political pressure not to be the vote that would overturn the most significant piece of social legislation passed by Congress in decades. Indeed, in April President Obama took the unusual step of issuing something of a public warning on the subject, saying that he was “confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.”
It is impossible for a lawyer to read even the first few pages of the dissent without coming away with the impression that this is a majority opinion that at the last moment lost its fifth vote. Its structure and tone are those of a winning coalition, not that of the losing side in the most controversial Supreme Court case in many years. But when we get to Page 13, far more conclusive evidence appears: No less than 15 times in the space of the next few pages, the dissent refers to Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s concurring opinion as “Justice Ginsburg’s dissent.” |

At the very-least it has put the responsibility back onto Congress and the voters.. where it should of been all along. I think Republicans were confident it wouldn't stand against the scrutiny of the Supreme Court, confident; again with this approach they figured if they didn't act, Compromise, amend and work to get an overall acceptable reform that it would meet it's end at the steps of the Supreme Court....
Now it would seem, Republicans will have to do something. The Health Care law needs work, and it is going to be done with a government that functions or continues in the shape that it is in. |

Obamacare needs to be on the ballot for the PEOPLE to decide on, but we know that won't happen...Polls say 60% want it gone.

If Roberts did switch votes, it would not be all that unusual as that does happen in the process of writing opinions. In addition, there is no real way we will ever know.
Immediately after the oral arguments, the justices meet by themselves and no law clerks are in the room. At that time, the justices first vote and see where they stand. As the process evolves, the research is done and opinions are written and more discussions. Over time, it is quite possible that justices, at times, change their votes. Regarding Roberts, as I have stated in another topic, there were people present for the oral arguments that saw Roberts facial expressions and body language in response to some questions the other conservatuve justices that seemed to imply that Roberts was disagreeing with the other conservative justices. In addition the questions that Roberts asked also faintly implied that maybe he believed it should be upheld. The feeling was that if any conservative was going to vote with the liberals it would be Roberts and probably Roberts alone. In all fairness a number of people thought that the possibility of Roberts actually doing that were very, very remote. It was just that if any of the conservative ones voted to uphold Obamacare it would be Roberts. |

Depends upon which poll you look at.
I would be more than pleased to have the american people vote on the provisions of the bill individually. Oh and we all have to call it Obamney care now too. :-) |

Most people won't notice a difference.
Some people - healthy, young people will probably opt to pay the tax, because it will be cheaper than buying insurance. |

healthy young people making less than $250K a year? Almost sounds like a tax increase to me.
Another broken promise. |

So let me get this straight...
Conservatives say, "More people need to stop relying on the government and need to learn to be more responsible with obtaining their own health insurance." Government says, "That's a great idea, let's penalize people who don't take the responsibility to get themselves insured, but let's also make sure everyone has the option to get affordable health insurance if they want it." Conservatives reply, "How dare the government encourage personal responsibility through taxation!" My taxes still haven't gone up because of the "largest tax increase ever," by the way. |

did you think your taxes would go up overnight? You're obviously trolling, and doing a poor job of it.

What the Supreme Court basically did was stay out of it, and direct attention to where it should be: Congress. Stop blaming Roberts, he isn't an elected official.

@Pock
I believe @AV8R was referring to me trolling because I mentioned that my taxes haven't gone up in the "largest tax increase in history". All I'm asking for is some proof of that, because as long as I'm insured, it won't affect my taxes. |

Taxes are going to go up - it doesn't matter which politicians are in office. Taxes have to go up because they are at their lowest rates in years AND because we have a huge deficit.
One thing we can thank the republicans for is proof that tax cuts do not equal economic growth. |
