Rarely do you see a logical, sensical comment on PJStar, but I had to pass this one on, because hopefully it will get through some thick skulls:

BC and other union supporters - no argument that the people who make the machines are important, but remember: 1) you'd have nothing to make without the engineers who design and improve products, marketing people who sell the products, logisitics and supply chain experts who make sure everything you need to make your products is on hand, etc. 2) All those other jobs that allow you to make tractors or engines require much more education and training than most assembly line jobs. 3) The non-skilled work on the floor can be done cheaper, faster - and in many cases better - than in unionized American or European plants. 4) the higher you move up, the more responsibility and stress and outside-of-normal work hours you have. You would not have either a job or your salary without the leadership Owens and others provide.

Go ahead: moan and complain away - they're too busy running a multinational company that is tops in its field and protecting the jobs of the 80,000 + employees still on board, the hundreds of thousands of investors, and trying to bring back the 25,000 workers who they had to lay off. These guys have skills, knowledge, experience, foresight, and work stress that you will never know or understand. They deserve what they made.

Owens is a Terrorist, and before you get on the bandwagon of corporate American greedy Terrorist fanfare... there are companies that have "no layoff" policies. BIG companies that make it a point to put people first.. that have exhausted no paid vacations, cut salaries, creative marketing and ways to save peoples jobs and improve lives..

Remember, RAT made RECORD PROFITS in the last quarter of 08.. we are only in the 4th MONTH of 09.

Terrorist Owens

and for you capitalist greedy pigs out there.. before you start saying "it is their company, free this free that..." I know all this.. but don't make the RAT to be the nice person who made this choice with no other options.. they had options they chose the one that would line their greedy filthy pockets by taking advantage of the current market status to move jobs else where and to pocket even more greenbacks when things pick up.

Actually, Cat made record profits all of 08, not just the 4th quarter. Which is why Owens and many, many employees at Cat are getting their STIP bonuses from 08.

I know of no big company that has a "no layoff" policy. In fact, that would be one of the worst policies a publicly traded company could adopt, basically akin to Communism.

Try to imagine you had worked your ass off for years, in a matter of months the economy goes in the tank, and all of the sudden, you are expected to return all the wages you had earned by performing well.

Pock, you keep using this word "terrorist"when. you clearly don't understand the meaning.

Terrorist

"a radical who employs terror as a political weapon; usually organizes with other terrorists in small cells; often uses religion as a cover for terrorist activities "

Small Cells = RAT Management.
Religion = Capitalism.
Terror= Poorly handled business practices that now have caused great terror and grief for families.

Yep, sounds like a Terrorist to me.. Terrorism isn't just about crazy Arabs with bombs on their chest.. perhaps you don't know the meaning.

leslie110,

Of course not. I never said that. If the company was truly hurting they wouldn't be building other factories. If you were hurting financially, say a car note or house note.. would you buy another car or house?

Same thing with GM.. Wanting government handouts while they build a 400million dollar factory in Russia.

Your analogy doesn't hold up because the plants were planned long before the economy went south.

Did I miss something? I didn't realize that Cat was looking for handouts. From what I see, they're doing the INTELLIGENT thing - mitigating their problems on their own.

Maybe they SHOULD ask for handouts to keep people employed... right, Pock?

Riiiiiight.

brauner,

Not handouts, just respect. they exploited the current market status to justify moving those jobs.. they might of been planning this awhile.. but imagine the bad PR if they had done this before the current collapse.. they waited for the right time to execute their greedy plan under the guise of hardships.

What I mean, the layoffs were premeditated. As another poster just said they were going to happen regardless.. so stop blaming the current market status and call it for what it really is, the RAT is greedy.

Thats all I ask of the Terrorist Owens. To be REAL about it.

Cat has been laying people off worldwide. Are they all being transferred to the new plant?

If you are laying off people you shouldn't be opening a new plant in Russia, or working on building one in Brazil.

Wow, Pock...you are bitter! Are you one of the ones who got let go and can't find another job?

I don't see anything wrong with Jim Owens getting paid $17.7 million. Like other people have said...that is small compared to salaries that other large corporations pay to people in the same position. I'm sure there are quite a few other people at Cat, that make millions a year too.

It's not that easy prepare for a recession. You just have to deal with it when it hits.

netchris,

Nah. I don't work for RAT. I've gotta several messages asking that lol.

To want to be greedy and outsource to cheap labor is one thing.

To put it in the guise of hardships and laughing it up at the country club is another.

I guess the system is set to allow greed not much we can do about it.. just thought I'd give me 0.02
