I'm only posting this because I just shared this with my step dad..who has the same problem.

I really hate going to the doctor, more for cost factor than any other issue.. So I tend to try and find home remedies (for myself) if possible.

@EyeintheSky

Are you aware that taking a diuretic can lead to gout? You mentioned in another thread that you take a diuretic. My late father took diuretics for high BP and wound up with gout repeatedly until the doctor gave him daily medication for gout and it cleared up.

Certain foods can cause it to flare up. Some that you might not expect. For me, it's apples. I love them, but I just can't eat them. Since I quit eating them I haven't had any flareups.

With your constant flare ups, I find it odd your doctor doesn't put you on Allopurinol. I was on it for awhile, but gave it up and changed my diet. I know now not to combine too much red meat, red wine and beer in several days time. Have your doc do a uric acid blood test.

The major ingredient in Indometacin, which is the common 'script for gout is Ibuprofen plus a few other things. So, that, ice it, some swear by cherry juice. Lots of water to flush out the system and of course, stay away from foods known to cause it.

Eye... WOW...didn't know all that. Didn't tell you anything you didn't know Emoticon Amazing how all our bodies process things differently and how it affects us. I know there is a list of foods that will help relieve gout, but I've tried a few, including high doses of (expensive) cherry juice and can't say they work much better than a combination of ice, ibuprofen and water if I don't have indometican. Running to the bathroom drinking all that water doesn't feel good on a gout infected toe, though Emoticon

@EyeintheSky

I understand you must take the diuretics, my dad did too. He had extremely high BP and two aortic aneurysms caused by the high BP, he took a lot of meds including diuretics trying to control it.

Has your doctor tried a corticosteroid injection or corticosteroids by mouth for your gout? Steroids might get it under control long enough for you to get over this flare. I'm sorry you have this, my dad suffered with it for years before he and his doctor found ways to avoid flares. He even asked to have his toe removed because it hurt so much.....

My biggest problem right now is the DR is being SLOW about calling in refill. I have been phone tag since Tue. Finally got nurse call Fri morning Dr had to approve then I get meds. My last call was 900pm to hyvee NO meds. So looks like Mon I might get the meds.

Isn't that nice of your doctor and/or his staff? Kinda seems like someone doesn't give a flying eff.... Of course that someone isn't the one in pain so no biggie, huh? Time to shop around for a different doctor, one who doesn't make you jump through hoops to get meds for a chronic condition.

Its the WHOLE system that's messed up you call leave message for nurse WAIT for them to call back then explain it. Then they have to talk to DR then call you back then if meds they have to submit it to computer DR has to approve then its suppose to go to the pharmacy. That's if there is not a GLITCH in the system somewhere and the script gets lost in cyber space. I have had that happen then they play the blame game on who's at fault me I don't give a **** I just want the meds.

Its even worse with the kids DR you call and its a phone center in god knows where then they do all of the above. Before I could call the office get the front desk and have problem dealt with with 1 phone call NOW it takes at least 3-4. Mine is Methodist and the kids are OSF.

I have even tried the just make appointment but then you get one 1-2 weeks out because they book the DR so full to crank out the most MONEY. Back when the kids were little we had the DR direct number you could call him 24/7 he ALWAYS answered got problem fixed called the meds in directly and within an hour you had problem fixed. I just LOVE the new and improved medical system it almost forces you to go to the ER for simple stuff and spend MONEY.
