District 150 revising early dismissal

Proposed amendment would cut back 23 early dismissal days to 15 during school year

PEORIA —

District 150 officials are retreating a bit from the original plan to shorten school days on Wednesdays.

An amendment proposed this week would limit to 15 the number of those days earmarked for early dismissal.

A 2008-09 school calendar submitted earlier this month to the Peoria County Regional Office of Education contained 23 such days at the primary school level.

Superintendent Ken Hinton said Thursday the cutback will allow the district to ease into the new schedule.

"I want to move into this gradually instead of all at once," Hinton said. He noted the cutback will give principals and other staff members the chance to prepare for the shortened days, which are designed to give time for teachers to improve their teaching abilities and examine student performance data.

Of the 15 days, six are district-wide half-day school improvement days, a practice nearly all school districts incorporate throughout the school year. In past years, these school improvement days were held on Fridays, but under the amended school calendar, they would be shifted to Wednesdays.

The remaining nine days - reduced from 17 - will affect only 12 of the district's 16 primary schools. Those students would start the day at 8:45 a.m. and end at 1:45 p.m., as opposed to the usual 3:15 p.m.

Hinton said the reduction in the number of early release days also comes from his discussions with parents, teachers and some "naysayers."

The last-minute revision this week is another step back from what originally was proposed as a 45-minute early release from each school day at those same 12 primary schools. That was scaled back from every day to 90 minutes every Wednesday, and now to just 15 Wednesdays - of which six would have been taken place regardless.

Since a plan seeking to shorten the school day was announced, the district has met with opposition by several parents and some teachers at each of the subsequent School Board meetings, as well as at least one demonstration in front of district administration offices.

If the amended school calendar is approved, the primary schools affected at District 150 would have 159 pupil attendance days, the least in Peoria County. The average is about 167 days. By contrast, District 150 counted 166 pupil attendance days last year.

Hinton has emphasized the need for more professional development, if the district is to see any dramatic improvement in student achievement.

The School Board is expected to vote Monday on the amended school calendar.

I don't understand why they can't do teacher development during the summer. Why do school days need to be shortened at all? I work 8-5 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Why can't a teacher work a few more hours?

I think if the Board of Education is looking for time for teachers to improve their teaching abilities and examine student performance data they should look at the 3:15pm - 5:00pm window that is available every day, and if more time is needed then I would agree to extend that time to 6:00pm, and if that is not enough time then I would approve a Saturday schedule of 8:00am - 5:00pm also.

I know that is a taboo subject. I have many friends who are teachers and I would say this to their face also. If a teacher makes $40,000 a year and works, lets say 200 days a year, (which is a high estimate) and 7 hours a day then that is $28.57 an hour. That is more than nurses and many other positions. That is not mentioning the money saved by not having to pay for day care on holidays and school breaks. I know teachers have difficult jobs and I ma not trying to diminish their hard work.

Teachers can't get paid enough for what they do.  They not only have to teach and make sure that every child passes the mandated tests the state gives them, they have to discipline without being able to touch the students.  Then they have to deal with the parents, who often are worse than the students.  Then they have to take most of their grading, reports etc home with them and work all evening.  They also have to attend meetings, take more classes for themselves year after year, and attend sporting events and whatever else the school district thinks up.  Then they pay for lots of the things they do in class out of their own pockets.  Any treats, special workbooks, bulletin boards, etc. are not provided by the district.  At some schools, they even get to do laundry.  And now many places want them to pass tests to prove they are good teachers and if the class they are teaching doesn't do well, then it must be the teacher's fault as well.
Last I looked, nurses don't have to have a 4 yr degree.  Also, when in college, teachers have to do an internship and not get paid for it.  Engineers get paid for theirs.

You couldn't pay me enough to be a teacher.  This country does not respect authority or it's teachers.  In Europe, teachers are some of the highest paid individuals and they are thought of as being as professional as most doctors.  In fact, many teachers have their doctorate degrees.  Until you have been a teacher, you will never understand all the work that goes into it.

Leslie, the teachers were not for the shortened school day either. Their primary concern is for the children they teach and they knew just as a matter of common sense that taking time away from the children is not right. This was a scheme cooked up purely by D150 Admin and rubberstamped by the board, but it appears that for now, it is being shelved. We must remain vigilant, however, that it doesn't reincarnate in to some other form.

Shelved? Did I miss something? He's still cutting Wednesdays, just not EVERY Wednesday. I can't speak for all teachers, but those who are my relatives work harder than most people who have "full time" jobs and get paid minimally for the near 24hr job they have.

I think the number of Wednesday's of early release is down to like 9 or something like that. Can't remember the details. It was in last weeks PJStar.

I pity the person who is responsible for creating the District Calendar, and I REALLY feel sorry for the Transportation Department!
