District 150 Boundry Waivers

Just got a letter from District 150 stating that even though they don't have the 2011-2012 testing results they know our school, Glen Oak, is not going to meet state required levels therefore we are eligible to apply to have Airen moved to a different District 150 school as long as I complete the application and turn it in before August 26th. My biggest problems with this are (1) they aren't guarenteed to accept/allow us to go to another school (2) they are not going to tell us IF they lets us wwitch school until August 26 hoever school starts on August 20th (3) they list 4 schools that they allow us to pick from - 3 middle schools and 1 elementry.

What are the schools, and that will give you a good idea as to whether or not you'll get in.

Cause this happened to a friend of mine last year and all they would "accept" her into was another crappy school.

Mark Bills Middle School
Calvin Coolidge Middle School
Lindbergh Middle School
Roosevelt Magnet

The letter states that the district must give priority to the lowest achieving children from low-income families. What this says to me is that since my child has great grades (except Launguage Arts which she got a C in) we have little to no chance of actually getting the waiver granted. The problem is as long as she showed up, turned in her homework and behaves she gets a decent grade. Now ask me if she learned something last year and my answer is a resounding NO.

I strongly considered home-schooling for awhile for this reason but was afraid it would put me in the looney bin.

If students are not up to par then why are they moved to the next GRADE?

A resounding no, tls has the opinion her child was under-educated. Parents who speak out are deemed a nuisance and insunuating the ability of a childs learning experience is the fault the parents is nonsense.

And btw, par in American education is why were dumb, The State owns it. Keep paying taxes, bucko. The ROI is poor, agree?

@JnJ:

As a teacher and guidance counselor I have seen a number of students pulled from grade schools into home schooling. A number of those students ended up back in the grade schools after one, of both, of the parents had mental breakdowns.

At that point, the counselors have two problems, students that are behind and with parents, or a single mother, that is under psychiatric care. It is several sandwiches short of a picnic.

That is a whole other aspect of the subject of home schooling that you rarely hear about.

@meanjarhead:

This is very true.A few years ago, a student in my school was having trouble with reading. The student was marginal about passing into the next grade. The teacher told the mother that if the student read aloud at home for about 20 minutes a day, there was a good chance the studnet would imnprove and pass into the next grade.

Ther mother screamed, yelled and said that teaching the child was not her duty etc. etc. It got ugly. Long story short and there was an intervention students grandmother The student read aloud for 20 minutes, improved and passed into the next grade. A couple of years after that the student was on the honor roll and remained there for the rest of her time at the school

Quite honestly the teachers just don't have time to teach. They spend most of their day trying to control the misbehaviour.

From Billybobswife: "Ther mother screamed, yelled and said that teaching the child was not her duty etc. etc. It got ugly."

While I have no opinion one way or the other on Boundary Waivers, it is very sad that a parent doesn't think it's THEIR job to teach their child. WRONG! The parent is always, always, the 1st and Primary teacher of their child, especially when they are infants - 5 years old. This is a concept that is pushed constantly to our Early Head Start and Head Start parents.

Parents need to realize that they don't necessarily have to teach math, English, science, etc. to their children; they need to teach life skills: respect, studying hard, setting goals, doing their best no matter what the home circumstances are. Parents also need to be there to reinforce the importance of doing homework, and being there to help if they can. That kind of love and parenting will ensure a successful student in school, as seen by the example that billybobswife outlined. (except a grandparent had to step in, unfortunately)

I've always suspected that isn't all raindrops and roses. Can't tell you how many times I've seen home-schooled kids shopping with their parents in the middle of the school day. ;-P

At least though I have the good sense to recognize that I don't have the temperament as a parent to be with my kids 24/7

@JnJ:

In my opinion, and others, a great deal of the home schooling, however, well intentioned, is to try and shield kids from some of the real world challenges and issues such as drugs, gay students, history etc. etc. etc. the list is endless. However, the parent, or parents, dont understand that even with home schooling the same issues will be there when their child goes into the real world.

I dont mean to be disparaging single mothers at all. However, a large percentage of home schooling is done by single mothers. A large percentage of those students do return to a regular school and are often times behind their peers.

The reasons given by the single mother for returning the kids to school is they have found a new man/boyfriend./ive in etc. or they were trying to use the child as a pawn with an ex. It goes on and on without end.

After 30 years in the business, I have seen and heard it all. If I havent seen or heard about it, it doesnt exist.
