Discrimination...

Knowing i'm lighting the fuse on a hot topic..I have to relate this. I'm moving into a new house. One that will allow me to re-build my music studio, and rehearsal space. Now, I have the needed things to basically cut noise down to a minimum. My last house, the neighbors never even suspected I was playing late into the night.
Today, while un-loading things, I saw my new neighbor in his yard. I thought i'd introduce myself and be neighborly. He's a mid-thirties black man.(who cares) BUT, he actually said to me, "I see you unloading a bunch of amplifiers and drums and such." "This is a pretty quiet neighborhood, are you sure you want to live here?" If the tables were turned, and he was moving into my neighborhood, and I said that.. It would be assumed that I was discriminating, and a racist jerk. WTF??? Talk about a double standard.

Tell him you run a repair shop.

I guarantee he is going to have a stethescope up to his wall every night. Give him a few weeks to realize you don't know how to play a note :-)

Naaah. He was just observant and concluded Drums=Loudness. (They do!) It probably is indeed a nice quiet neighborhood. But I agree. Not one of your nicest "welcome to the neighborhood" statements.

"Naw, those are only used when someone in the neighborhood fires up their leaf blower at 8am on a Sunday morning".

This has nothing to do with discrimination or racism. "Being loud" is not a protected class. The man simply wants to maintain quiet enjoyment of his home - like the majority of the John Q public. You are going down the wrong road on this, SC and using that reason to not respect your neighbors concerns would put you at the same level of others that drop the "R" word for convenience.

Be a good neighbor, make sure you don't disrupt the neighborhood. It is your duty as a citizen and the all-around good person that you are.

my uncle lined the walls of his studio with foam padding and egg cartons being thrown out by mcdonalds.. you could watch tv in the living room directly above and barely hear anything.

NO, I stated in the original post that I have what I need to basically soundproof the area i'll be using. I've done it before, in previous houses. I do not intend to disturb anyone with noise. What i'm saying, is if a minority were moving into MY neighborhood, and I made the comments that HE made to ME...It would immediately be assumed that I did not want him there because he is a minority.
