I don't think "the rules" have EVER changed. Human beings function at a level only slightly above the typical animal. Wherever there's a male, he's usually looking for an available female. The easier she's "available" the sooner he's likely to become disinterested, if he operates at a level even slightly above that of a dust mite. Same is true of females, actually.... but usually for different reasons than why a man becomes easily & quickly disinterested.

Just my thoughts on the subject for whatever they're worth.

Man, after my last GF and I broke up, I was devastated.
But I had some serious issues, too, so I spent almost 5 yrs remaking myself.
Believe me, when Bridget and I met, I was a much different person, all the way around, and that "remake" cause that ugly breakup to become an great friendship.

The moral of the story is that I lost sight of the goals I had set for myself and became obsessed wit the fact that I had been single for so long. Now, in the end, I have gained a lot out of this relationship, but probably lost a lot too, so in a way, I feel like I settled, which has left a lot of room for the struggle and chaos we've gone through over the years.

There really is no need to ever rush into anything with anyone.
If it's meant to last, then it will regardless.

Oh, and not ALL jerks get the girls.
It helps to be a good looking jerk, too, I think, 'cause I'm an unattractive jerk that has definitely gone home alone WAY too many times!
