NASA and the NOAA are both predicting a "moderate to severe" Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) was released from the sun recently and will likely impact Earth around 8:00 am CDT Saturday, July 14th. Effects could range from virtually unnoticeable, to aurora displays far south of what is considered the norm, to a worst case scenario of a major disruption of the national power grid. NOAA and NASA disagree with each other regarding the intensity of the CME.
I'm not going to panic, but I think I'll unplug the computers and TVs from the wall tonight. Of course, if the CME is strong enough, it will toast delicate electronics even if they are disconnected. We have become dependent on electronics and have failed to adequately harden them against this type of storm.
Wish I had built that faraday cage a few months ago when the thought crossed my mind....
