Combofix is the best for cleaning up any virus but be careful it will fix the problem no matter what sometimes causing you to have to do more advanced options after. Like restoring deleted registry files from a back up...

When I saw the suggestion recommending Combofix, I imagined a follow up thread seeking help to fix the things Combofix messed up lol

Yeah to be honest I wouldn't recommend it unless you are fairly confident working in command prompt or have a good techy friend haha.

Hence my disclaimer following my advice. 95% of the time, Combofix works great with no further steps needed.

I've used CF 3 times, once for myself I confess, and I've never had any problems afterwards. The once myself was when I got a little rambunctious wanting to watch the newest Breaking Bad (from that night) and got a little fast and loose with my clicks. That was while out of town on business on my work machine, dicey situation..

In most cases, if CF doesn't fix it, you are going to attempt to salvage data via command line and format, no? If I had a backup to restore registry files from, it wouldn't be as big of an issue..

Late to the party here but...I had this S.M.A.R.T. piece of shiit. The guy who dealt with it for me said one of its attributes is that it has/can/does remove the directory from your registry so that it appears that you have no files (or something like that...I'm not too good with tech talk).

Ya. They do tricky things to convince people to purchase software that isn't needed. I've actually cleaned systems of this S.M.A.R.T malware twice.

Was this the same virus that was affecting Peoria Pundit?
