You assume they did anything at all to be in thier situation to begin with. Ya Im sure a lot of people are resonsible for why they are there, but the 9 year old I always saw on Sunset DID NOT put herself there. The Vet with no legs in his wheelchair DID NOT put himself there.
Giving advice to a street person who probably hasnt eaten or baithed in days or weeks seems very self righteous to me, giving a hand out seems very humble. |

Here's the deal, and I'm sorry this is so long.
Things all snowballed at the same time. The Town of Tonanwanda is a suburb of Buffalo. Our landlord was from there. Foxy's inlaws are from there, and it was in that town that I started getting pulled over for bunk speeding tickets. So many, I eventually lost my license, AND the trucking business I owned. I did like you said, had a relibale vehicle and a few nice suits and did something I never tried before: Sales. Home Improvement sales, but in 3 months I never made one sale and our savings were running out. The company I got hired on to (Google FJB Associates) was a total rip-off company. I was making sales, but they would mysteriously cancel, or not get financed. I had a few in the next few months that did go through, but not enough to get caught up. We fell behind on the rent, and the landlord took me to court to have us evicted, and when I showed up I had the 2 months rent that I owed him, paid him and then, and even though he told me different, he went through with the eviction. In 72 hours, with no money to put down on an apartment, we had to leave. Even the Marshall was disgusted. He had, by law, 30 days to safely secure our belongings, but within a week, he put it all outside without notifying me until well after the fact. We were staying at my Mom's but that was not good. My mom and I don't really speak - long story, so anyhow, we decided to come here, where Foxy's family is, who were very into our kid, unlike my family. In the porcess we lost everything. I mean everything except most of our clothes. Every photograph I ever had, vinyl albums, some of which were never played and signed by the bands, antique furniture that was handed down from my great grandparents, clothes, kitchenware, computers, Foxy's drum set, my PA equipment, I mean I can go on and on. I had enough weights and workout equipment to start my own gym. Brand new washer and dryer. Worst of all was all of my daughter's things. Her crib, armour, changing table, stuffed animals, all of it, gone. In the meantime, I got pulled over a few times driving on a revoked license and those tickets were never paid, because I just didn't have the money, and after moving here, was making so little money, that I lost my Expedition to repo. So now, we are literally scratching to get by. Determination? I have learned two new trades here, and neither opened the doors to any real money. I have resumes all over town, on the job search sites, hell, even on THIS one. I would kiss someone's ass if they would tell me where I can find a job that actually pays a decent wage, that I can get to and from every day, and I'm talking 40,000+, not the 10.00 an hour I make now. (20,000.00 a year!) No, Cat broke the unions so hourly wages here suck and without a formal education, I'm screwed. We have defintely been on top and the bottom and are a few steps above that now, but barely scraping by, and the fact that we can end up like that again terrifies me. As far as what Foxy said about Republicans, here's my take. The last time a Democrat was in office, the economy took an upturn, people had money, nice things, the deficit went down, life was good. Since a Republican has been in office, expenses have more than tripled, but wages have not budged, other than minimum wage. An an increase in minimum wage is just a way to raise the tax base. In fact, in many places, they've gone down. The country is losing jobs at a frantic rate. From where I sit, the Republicans have ruined this country, yet the rich, the Republican's base, are getting richer by the bucket load. Poverty is growing even faster. One other thing, about Foxy's racist statements: That's like calling a nun a whore. I abhor racism, but compared to her, I'm like a total bigot. When I made a casual comment about the huge # of interracial relationships I've seen since I moved here, she practically broke up with me. Maybe y'all don't know where that came from, but calling her a racist is about the most disgustingly hurtful thing you could say to her. Is she confrontational? Yes. Outspoken? Hell yes? Are her posts very edgy and borderline psychotic? Uh uh! Accuse her of having bad breath, but when you accuse her of being a racist, you're accusing me of putting up with a racist. And that is one thing, in MY house, OUR house, that will not fly. I joke with both of our parents, who ARE very racially prejudiced that I hope my daughters come home with black lesbian girlfriends, just to spite them. And if they did, they would be very welcome in our home.We don't tolerate it, joke about it, or ignore it and I'm very shocked that she would be accused of being a racist. Sorry for the book! |

Thats a beautiful theory, but unless you plan on giving the homeless man a house and a car and the tools to upkeep and take care of them your waisting your time.
cant teach a man to fish unless you give him the tools to go fishing. Oh and you also have to take him to the lake. |

No child or disabled person (mental or physical) deserves to be homeless. We have government programs to ensure that. We also have programs to ensure that able bodied persons don't have to live on the street. The catch is that they must be sober. There are even programs to help homeless people get off of drugs and alcohol so that they can better themselves. That is where the choice is made. The tools are there. I'm not heartless, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

Did anyone ever see on Oprah were they gave a homeless man 100,000 dollars. Within a year i believe he was back on streets. He had blown through all of his money nad said he felt most comfortable on the streets

I saw the documentary on that.
Hereally didn't have the support he needed. They basically let him make his own decisions. I like how they did it. Instead of giving him the money, they stashed in a dumpster he frequented so that he'd find it. Dave, I make 240.00 a month above the poverty line in the US. Wanna know how many of those programs I'm eligible for? Zero. None. Not one. I doin't have bennies at my job. If I have a heart attack, I guess I should just die. And your criticism of Foxy's post was way off target. She's not wrong. You can give him a fishong pole, but homeless people want immediate satisfaction, not something to work toward. When I was in Austin, the Salvation Army was right next to the building were putting up. There was one guy who stayed there that was totally healthy, young, etc, so we sent him in to get a job as a laborer. He was a nice guy. Got his first paycheck and we never saw him again. Most homeless people are mentally challenged and don't have the faculties or the desire to go fishing. |

ok, this might very well be my last post, unless an explanation followed by an apology gets to me from the mod who just sent me a message telling me Im making rascist comments here. Since Foxy is still here, I have to ask: who's the moderator that broke weak and apologized? |

#1 Hipcat.....I didn't mean that literally. It was figurative. I'm not literally handing out fishing poles to the homeless, lol.
#2 You are not eligable for those programs because you are not homeless. You have income. And yes there are programs for low to medium income households. You just have to ask. You'd be surprised. #3 "Homeless people want immediate satisfaction." It doesn't work that way. Planning and strategy will pay off. #4 "They basically let him make his own decisions" [Referring to the homeless guy on Oprah]. As opposed to what? Communism? #5 If you have a heart attack, rest assured you will be revived if possible. Doctors must treat you regardless. (maybe even by a doctor who has cheated on his wife, lol) |
