Depends on what you are watching... and the specs of your TV.

Sometimes you can have black space on the left and right. Sometimes you can have black space surrounding the picture.

Your remote should have a button that can sort of adjust that but it might stretch the picture or crop it some.

If you bought at 1080p resolution TV and you are watching a 480p picture through your cable box, the image is only going to take up 480p of that 1080p screen space.

Some pricier TVs and Blu-Ray players have an up-conversion capability but the quality varies.

what annoys me now is that my older TV's are truncating the picture on the sides. Its like the picture is being sent in a wider format than my tv can handle. And the tv is so old, it was one I had in college, so its pre-1989, doesn't really have any image formatting.

speaking of new TV's, we need to get some new TV's. I'd like one to hang on the wall in the bedroom that has a dvd player integral to the tv.

Our 50" high def TV is a lamp one and its starting to act up... would like to replace that with a better one.

I have a plasma and an LED (LCD??). The LED one is a much clearer pic. That's been my experience.

I was looking at cnet reviews... I was thinking that I would like an LCD, but the plasma's are so much cheaper.
