Good Neighbors in Peoria
Aug 9, 2012 - 11:17 am
Most of time, when you hear stories about Peoria's Southend, it's about crime, a murder or robbery. These stories will prove that there are many hardworking residents doing what they can to make their neighborhood a nice place to live...because they choose to live there.

Here is a link to a video produced in partnership with Neighborhood Views Cable TV show:

A Good neighbor is someone who keeps within his property line, minds his own business and every once in awhile will say, Good morning Pock.

Any more or less than that, Forget it.

@Pock:

I didn't mean to thank you.. that was a mistake.. I just wanted to quote you to say I'm glad my neighbors do more than give a nod as we drive by one another. We sought out a neighborhood where our children play with the children from the houses surrounding ours.. where our neighbors are welcome to our garden as we are their orchard.. where the neighbors will bring up our trash can if they know we are sick (kids talk).. or bring a meal over if we are having a rough week. We have 45 minute conversations between yards in the evening to catch up on school and neighborhood happenings. I feel safe to call a neighbor to have their teen watch ours after school if I'm running late.. And I'm glad we all kind of play 'keep up with the Jones' when it comes to our yards because that is why we take pride in it.. even when the majority of yard grass has been burnt up this summer. We still have trimmed trees and landscapes, fly Flags and show support to local sport teams through team signs.

I feel by doing this we are giving our children a taste of what we had as kids. I want them to have that happiness and safe feeling in where we live.

And I'd also like to commend those that encourage neighbors rather than discourage. Awesome job 'Carthel!'. It just takes one act to start a domino effect.

@Pock:

As opposed to an unsafe, litter-ridden environment in which we live and haven't participated in making an effort. I want our children to take pride in where and how they live no matter what town, which side of the tracks, above or below the hill..

@stayathomemommy:

So, the only way to achieve that is to have nosy neighbors, people who don't respect property lines and are too "much" in other people's business?

I'm not sure how or where the rest of you live, but I think one can achieve those situations, within the realm of Keeping out of peoples business, respecting property and being friendly, but not "over friendly"

Pock, I've learned (on here) that you can twist words in a million different directions to suit your argument. I have no fancy words, I am not quick with words and I refuse to go rounds with you on something I stated which I think is quite clear.

My neighbors are not nosy, they don't overstep boundaries and they aren't too much in our business. We are courteous and watch out for one another and the properties for which we have an investment of not only money, but time..friendships..and a future here.

May I ask what the hell you are talking about? You commented to a thread about good neighbors, and quoted ME on what MY opinion of a good neighbor is. And then you go on about 45 minute conversations and sharing gardens, and enjoying 'keep up with the Jones", and in the same thread, "I want them to have that happiness and safe feeling in where we live."

My reply wasn't twisting or "fancy" words at all, I simply asked as opposed to what. I got the impression that if we didn't share gardens, and "keep up with the jones" that we'd all live in the crime ridden neighborhood Dennis is always raging about.

If I mistook what you said, that's all you had to say, you know; no one is beyond making a mistake, but to go on this rant about how I twist words and you refuse to go round and round with me, well you know what, don't @Pock me to begin with, problem solved.

My neighbors are not nosy, they don't overstep boundaries and they aren't too much in our business.

Great, then by my original reply that YOU quoted, they are great neighbors.

You don't have many friends, do you Pock? A nice farm house in the country would fit you well.

@PeoriaIllinoisan:

Funny you mentioned that. We've started looking for houses, and my only request is enough land to not have neighbors close, my father is on 120 acres in Kentucky, middle of no where...which would be my ideal setting.. but can't get any modern services, the only thing that keeps me close to cities is the need for broadband..

as for Friends, I have friends. Up until today, I thought one of those friends knew me a bit better to know I wouldn't twist her words against her, while there are some on this forum I'd employ such tactics against; she isn't one of them. oh well; can't please everyone.
