I remember Schieres ( sp ? ) Dairy in Metamora and Roanoke and we had the sectioned wire handled basket to put the bottles in to take back and forth.

@Msgem:

My mom still has one of those baskets.

@Chef Kevin:

That could be a collectors item. I bet your mom has a lot of things that are.

@Msgem:

Yeah, her basement is a mint. It isn't because she collects anything, it is because "she (or dad) might need it someday". I think some things haven't been needed in 40 years. However, I understand the philosophy of those who lived through the Great Depression.

@Msgem:

I LOVED that place! When I moved to Metamora in the late seventies it was still open as well as the "Metamora Abbatoir" The best dairy products and the best fresh meat all in one little town. It was GREAT!

@skutfarcus:

We used to get milk from there too.
I miss Mel's Market.. both locations.. anyone remember those?

@stayathomemommy:

Actually there were 3 Mel's Markets. The original in Germantown Hills. (Although the REAL original was in the same building as Marchands Resterruant, later Al's Liquor) Bay View Gardens and Washburn.

That's right! I forgot about Washburn. I was thinking it was an IGA? And I thought the liquor store in Germantown was adjacent to a hair salon and Mel's was it's own building.. and then Hillyer's gas station. I was employed by one of them.. a long..long.. time ago!

@stayathomemommy:

The hair salon was a resteraunt back in the 50's & 60's. At one time there were 3 gas stations in town. I worked at all 3 of them at one time or another. (Before self-serve)
