theres a small brick tile patch wich is what im guessing is it, but at the house i was paying for when i lived there it had a old fashioned looking well with wood boards covering it so i assumed wether there was one or not your supposed to get billed. But i guess some how theres a difference.

How about a pressure tank and a pump?

If you were both paying, there should be a big fat credit on the account. The water company should see the errors of their way and refund you. If not, I'd raise holy hell.

My guess is they'll say it's your duty to make sure the address on the bill is correct.

Probably, but it doesn't mean that it's not blatantly obvious that they have been billing the exact same water usage/metering to 2 separate residences for over a year. I would also raise hell.

Is it Illinois American Water?

If you get your water from a well, you shouldn't have a bill at all, since you're not using their water

A well is literally that, a pipe that goes down into the ground and takes advantage of the natural (free) groundwater. There is no bill for a well, except the maintenance of the well parts; the downpipe, the pump and pressure tank, etc. There are of course other risks; well running dry, crappy water, water getting fouled, etc.

Seriously throw a fit, there is no reason for you to not be refunded.

I don't know where McHenry is, but looks like it's a combined water / sewer bill. Even if you have your own well (or maybe a shared well??) you might still be being billed for sewer service.

You need to know if you really have your own well and septic on the house or not.

Surely by taste you can tell if its well water or not. And if it is and I moved into a house that had it I would have it tested if your gonna be consuming it.

McHenry is up north - way up north.

Its quite possible to have a well and a water meter. (one for drinking, one for irrigation or geothermal)

What I am surprised is that a person would live in a home where they do not know where their comes from and where their sewer goes.
