Serious questions about the Military
Mar 22, 2012 - 07:33 pm
I know a girl,17 turning 18 in abt 10 wks..wanting to go into the Military. She has Psychological issues and is on several medications. Which Branch requires a span of 2 years without medication? Will she continue to have Psychological care? Will she be able to continue with her current medications? The Recruiters say she must have a sleeve tattoo as well...and other tattoos to cover things up.

the tattoo thing is wrong Marines have to wear long sleeves now because of our tattoo's the armed forces really discourage tats. if she has psych probs she won't make it through boot camp or basic training.

She cannot follow simple rules, i dont know how she will make it. Even if she wont be on the battlefield, she will still have to go thru bootcamp???

If she wants to go in the Corps she would have to go through boot camp, basic training in the other branches. If she can't follow simple rules she needs to go far far away or get used to blanket parties.

Its been a couple decades since I left active duty, but my suggestion is to congratulate her on her desire to serve and then convince her to choose another path. The military will certainly not help her if she has emotional ormpsychological problems that require constant medication. Recruiters are looking for numbers, they have little motivation to discourage her. thats your job as her friend.

Edit: this is AV8R.. Wife didn't log off!

Its not what she really wants to do (i know this)...she thinks its a way out of finding a job, facing the damage she has caused, and the responsibilities of becoming an adult. She says the Military pays for anything she needs....they even pay her without her having to work for it. She just doesnt get it.

Tell her to stay far away from my beloved Corps.

Maybe you should try as hard as you can to convince her to take another path. She is not stable, and heaven help us if she makes it through the boot camp or whatever and goes on active duty. I'd hate to see another emotional ticking time bomb kill innocent people and be defended because of their emotional turmoil.

She is at an age where she feels she is "invincible"...thats her mindset also. No one can make another do or not do something....even telling her the way things really are doesnt change things. She believes no one about the ways of life except her girlfriend..which is younger than her. I tell her things all the time...Im not sure if she hears me.

On a side note, my personal little rant for a second. What ever happened to joining the services because you wanted to defend your nation, and be part of something bigger? Now its all about "I'm just joining because they'll pay for my college, or my this, or my that" Then they all freak out when something happens and they are called to the front lines.

Just like (and heres where I veer off course) now a days people are just going into the medical field because its a stable job, guaranteed money, guaranteed hours, not because they care. I've wanted to be a nurse my whole life. Sure maybe once I said vet, and once I said culinary school but ultimately I ended back at nursing. I've been doing CNA work for 5 years and am currently waiting to get accepted into the LPN program at ICC. I see CNAs at my job who don't belong there at all, they don't want to do the line of work (they say so themselves) They need to go! It breaks my heart, these people are depending on us!!! Maybe I'm too soft hearted, and put too much faith in people. *shrug*

She's been drinking the recruiter's kool-aid. I worked like a dog in the military, and I was an officer during peacetime. She'll be enlisted during wartime? You do the math.

I so agree with you whole heartedly!! When she said this, it irritated me so much. Life isnt a joke....when she falls over her own stupidity...im not sure who will be there to help her up.

To my knowledge I was only shot at once in 8 years. That was in the Philippines. Fortunately he was no marksman. Found the bullet hole in the vehicle after we got back inside the wire. And yes, that was an international brotherhood / humanitarian mission.
