Discussion Question for parents

BE HONEST!

How would you feel if your child's teacher made his/her class go to a website and read a flattering biography of President George W. Bush in an effort to "teach them how to navigate a website?"

Thank god it wasn't Obama. Then we would have a problem.

I would not have a problem with any student reading a flattering biography of any president.

I wouldn't have a problem with it. The content was not the point, the navigation lesson was. And even if the teacher was biased, who cares? There's a lot worse **** they could be sending kids to (like pdc, ha!!!).

There are too many questions before I would venture a guess. How old are the kids? Many kids know how to navigate a website by the first grade. Whre there truly some new features on the website tbat they were learning? A flattering biography is one thing. Something that is distorted is quite another. Was this in a social studies/civic class? I would not venture a guess based on too many missing details.

If it wasn't a porn, racist or other negative website, I don't think I would question it so deeply or try to find a hidden meaning in the assignment.

I think teachers really get a bad rap for almost *everything* they do these days. Maybe the teacher felt this website would be perfect for this particular lesson and it just happened to be one on GWB? I wouldn't care if it was on Obama either. I want my kids to make up their own minds regardless of what political leaning I have.

FFS...they are elementary students...should they read a Bob Woodward book? As into politics as I am, and Abby watches a lot of it with me, I don't want my daughter reading a smear piece on anyone.

You don't have her reading All The President's Men yet?/

I actually read this a few months ago, for the first time. I wasn't alive during Watergate, but it was a compelling book.

100% neutral. Who doesn't remember learning about presidents in school? Why on earth would that upset you? Even if you have some anti-Bush agenda, is that really the attitude you want your child to have as well?

I don't try to tell her what to think. We were watching the Iowa caucuses and I explained to Abby what they were doing and why when Michelle Bachman came on...Abby asked me if I wanted to vote for her and I said no. After I explained my reasons Abby said that she didn't like Bachman...I said that wasn't nice and it was ok to disagree with someone but still like them. She understood...it is a shame that more adults can't do that.
