Can you sell a Link card?
Oct 5, 2011 - 02:12 pm
Is it attached to a name? Who would buy a Link card and not think it was a scam? I think you'd have to be a pretty good salesman (or woman in this case) to explain why you would be selling a Link card with $50 on it for $25.

Oh - this is in the Kroger parking lot @ Evergreen Square.

I can take a huge guess on why you'd sell a $50 card to someone for $25 cash.

Oh wait - they're not in the parking lot, they're inside the store. Currently in the bread aisle. That makes sense.

Oh, liquor & cigarettes. I didn't think of that. Can anyone use anyone's card or is ID required?

Not at Walmart and Kroger. I've seen people just swiping them. Sort of like how credit cards are now. No ID required.

I believe they have a PIN number, that's all you need.

I've been told there's a huge black market for LINK cards. Not that people would be fraudulent with them. That rarely happens in government programs.

I had a man approach me recently along the same lines. He offered to pay for my groceries using his Link card, but wanted me to pay for the cleaning/paper supplies (broom, bleach, furniture polish, mop, etc) he wanted to purchase. He told me that his family just moved into a new home and needed to clean it. I'm pretty sure his story was legit, but didn't feel comfortable doing it because it is illegal.

Which got me to thinking about the states (i.e. Rhode Island)that are researching allowing Link cards being used at fast food restaurants, but won't let people buy cleaning supplies. Not smart in my opinion.

My first reaction beyond the illegal and whatnot is that how do you even know there's $50 ON the card to begin with? I remember there was a guy who got caught selling used phone cards a few years ago.. he bought 'em, used em all up, then sold them at half the face value for some emergency or something. Lotsa angry people....

No it needs to be made so that the only things bought are food and not lobster and steak. Make it beans, bread and hamburger only.
