Ahh, another business the employs a large amount of people in the area that Conrad won't be supporting...Anybody see a pattern forming here? Bass Pro will get more people the opening week then the Museum/Cat Plaza will see in a month.

I’m for private investment in private enterprise. Who are you to say I am against things that create jobs? I am for real growth, not the shifting around that EP’s big box sandbox creates. Go back to your music career, Seal. You continue to demonstrate that you are clearly ignorant about how what progress is.

Jobs are not being created; they are being pulled from existing businesses. While competition is healthy, Bass Pro has stacked the deck with their use (abuse) of taxpayer funds. There is no competition here and there is no growth. Rather than subsidize retail, the region should be attracting more businesses (manufacturing, etc.) that offer head of household wages; jobs that will bring people to the area and create real demand for new retail and service. That is real growth, not shifting. I don’t expect you to understand this, Seal, so please hold onto your rigid beliefs and limited grasp of reality.

It's not just big box stores anymore, Conrad. The little guys are cashing in, too. Peoria taxpayers are on the hook for a a loan to a Coney Dog location. It's a sign of the times, adapt or die.

The former employers won't have the same demand and the need for the same number of employees.

yes and the only reason these small businesses are cashing in is because the municipalities have opened the door by bonding large private projects. Cities now have to bond small private development projects to level the playing field. Will Bartonville pony up bonds to keep Presley's business? Eventually there will be no difference between private and public enterprise. I find it interesting that conservatives support increasing the size of the government debt and resources to fund this stuff.
Personally, I have mixed feelings. I think it is good for short term economic growth, but I still wonder if its really good for long term community stability. I will enjoy the short term benefits. But I wonder what will happen to the buildings when the lease runs out. The lease payments don't cover the bond payments. There is a risk that the net benefit to the community won't cover the bond payments. I'm not fond of using tax based government bonds to cover development risk. |
