Family Genealogy DNA Test on the Peoria.com Forums

I have a second cousin on my maternal side who would like me to do this::

"I'm gathering information again about our family genealogy. The DNA tests I've completed only provide a link to the paternal lineage of the ancestors of xxxx, nothing for Nona ( your great gm) and her maternal line. You are the only living relative I know of that would be a direct link to that line; it must be a mother to daughter relationship. Would you be willing to do a test to secure that information? If so, we would use the Family Tree DNA organization to do the mtDNA test. It is a simple swab on the inside of your cheek to gather sufficient information to conduct the test. Their web site is familytreedna.com if you would like to learn more about the organization or the tests. I would order and have them send you the test kit if you agree."

Would you do it ? It would be interesting to see what they come up with.

Absolutely would not do this.

Why ?

She's afraid she might be related to us.

Because it's likely that the results would go into a nationwide DNA database which could possibly be tampered with and next thing you know you are being accused of a crime. Call me paranoid but stranger things have happened...

Plus, you never know what you might find out. Remember Mommy used to spend a lot of time making sure she had the right package from the mailman....? Just sayin...

Do you really know this person? I have seen scams along these lines, they send you a kit at high price. Normally, the scam goes further back in time and make claims that you may be related to some great historical figure, such as Cleopatra.

Even if it is on the up and up and you know him, I would still be leery of it, but that's just me being a bit paranoid.

Yes I know him well, we are related, 2nd cousin to me on my Mom's side.

It is a DNA test that tells if you're swedish, egyptian, german or have a small trace of chinese? I've seen some stuff on that (nothing bad) and I think that's interesting.

But the other one......why, if your fam, if your fam...seems fishy/scammish to me.
- Did he/she do one?
- anyone else in the fam do one?

Yes, he took one for the parental side.

Is he asking you to pay? Pretty sure these tests run in the hundreds of dollars.

If you did do it, I would do it independent of his dna company, I'd have him pay, and I would hold the results.

No, He offered to pay for the it. Yes it is expensive and IF I do it he WILL pay for it.

i don't see any problem with it. a little surprised that people are being so paranoid about it. he gave you a link to the company website. look it up, it's completely legit.
