I've been here for 5 years and the sirens are a little unnerving, especially if they wake you up at night, but for the most part, people here don't seem to get too excited by them.
During the day, I just go outside and watch for anything coming, keep an eye on the news (Ch. 31 seems to do the best coverage during a Tornado warning) and at night, just hope for the best, I guess. Peoria, itself, seems to be under a bubble. The worst storms always seem to veer north or south and the worst is across the river. |

Other than the huge tornado that took out a swath about a mile wide between metamora and roanoke back in 2004, tornadoes are typically small in size......we have about 5-8 strong storms each spring season...
It's either that or mudslides, fires, hurricanes, tsunamis....you name it. There's a natrual disaster that resides.. |

I have this feeling that people from outside the midwest think that we experience tornadoes like any other region has rain or "a little windy."
"How do you deal with them?" Oh, I dunno. Throw a few bags of sand in the trunk to weigh it down, and strap my hat around my chin a little tighter.... |

And we have basements. Those are our 'storm shelters'.

I don't think I will take them lightly at all. But I do live in an apartment and there is no basement so I'm not sure what I would do. I'm assuming go to a spot far away from the windows and just wait. The research I have done shows the ones that touch down here are not very strong to were they would tear your house apart. It also shows that there have only been about 14 touchdowns in like the past 15 years. Also what months do most tornadoes happen in? Thank you all for your input and advice. Its nice when you have no idea of what to expect in s new state.

Tornado season, if yo uant to call it that runs from March til September, although the worst storms are usually in June- August.
Of course, we DID have Tornado sirens a few weeks ago.... lol I came from a place that doesn't have Tornados and I'm not scared. Just the opposite, I get a total adrenaline rush when the weather gets bad |

Well at least you live in the area with all the rich people! Welcome to Peoria! Your State Income Taxes just got raised 67%. Riverplex has a nice place for your gym membership and activites for kids. You have Glen Oak Zoo. Try Avantis! I'm sure you didn't have 1 of those in California. There's also Lakeview Musuem. Summertime, there's a nice swimming spot in East Peoria (can't think of the name...someone help out here). Plenty of bars and strip joints on Main Street.
We'll get tornado warnings...but for the city...we never get anything! Just the rush! By the way......it's not better in Peoria, but people are friendly! |
