Netflix streaming
Jan 12, 2011 - 09:24 am
To go along with a previous JnJ post...

I'm not too tech savvy (anymore) and need some advice. Interested in this whole Netflix streaming thing. I have a DSL Pro connection, a router, a satellite box and an old school TV. I'm thinking all I really need then is a WiFi capable Blu-Ray player or something of the sort? Really have no interest in a Wii or gaming system. Am I close?

I would love to help, but I've never used netflix. I don't see why you'd need a blueray player if it's streaming. If your video card supports it, you might be able to hook up your TV as a monitor?

The Netflix site has detailed info on what you need, plus a tutorial and a helpline. You need a specific device to do the streaming, whether it be a game system (Wii) or blueray player. My brother in law says he streams through his laptop which he then hooks up to his tv.

In any event, Kev, do the 30 day free Netflix trial and experiment. My guess is you'll be able to figure it out within the 30 days and if it doesn't work out just cancel at the end of the intro period and then you aren't out a dime.

Oh, do the speed test of your internet connection first at speedtest.net and make sure your connection is fast enough. Then report back here!

if you already have wifi setup, the connection to a wifi streaming bluray is pretty easy. my brother picked up a wifi LG streaming blue ray for around $120 at American. It took less time to set it up for him than it takes to drink a beer.

After doing a bit of research, I think I am going to go this route:

http://www.roku.com/roku-products

As I rarely use my DVD player, I probably would use a Blu-ray even less. And for Tape's suggestion, which I thought of, I don't see how I could get my old school laptop to connect to my one room school house TV.

ever heard of Roku. I spent $150 dollars on a WD TV Live PLUS HD to do the same thing the Roku claims to do for 60! Let me know how it works out for ya

I signed up for the free month. Maybe I'll treat myself with one of the devices with my tax return....

That sounds like the same bluray player I waited for an hour at American to buy one night because the salespeople were too bone-headed to help me... I had to go track someone down.

Direct TV is raising their prices again starting March 1 I believe. So, end of February I'm pretty sure D.T.V. is going bye bye and Roku is getting a shot.

I have Roku -- it works great! I think I paid 60 bucks. Set up was easy, just plug it in and follow the on screen instructions. I also use InstantWatcher.com to more easily sort through the best streaming movies they have on there.

Amazon has Roku, I've never seen it in stores around here.

I am also looking at a WDTV box, which connects via Cat5 and HDMI and allows you to stream movies, etc from your main PC.
