Like Father...Like Son!

My 16 year old son has been practicing with a local band for a few months now. They had a show in Morton tonight. I got roped into supplying their sound system and got to see him play for the first time. Not my kind of music, necessarily, but still a proud Dad. He's carrying on a music tradition in my family that goes back to 1937. They were good enough that the "headliner" of the show asked them to go on to open for them in Davenport tomorrow night.

Congrats, SC! I'm sure having the proper sound equipment (and I have the feeling it is "the good stuff" ) helped give them some edge, too! Does he play guitar, too?

And when since have fathers ever approved of their kids music?

Right on all counts, Chef. Truthfully, I dug out my vintage PA for them to use. It's all classic '60's stuff. Remember that Kustom gear with the tuck and roll upholstery?

Sure do remember that Kustom tuck and roll design but haven't seen it in years. Letting them take it to Davenport?

NO, the venue in Davenport is providing the sound system for this show. I have quite a bit of the Kustom gear, and some vintage VOX also. I keep it pretty close to home.

It is neat when our children give us those moments of proudness. Did you think then how your Dad felt with you ? The beat goes on.

What kind of music does he play, SC? The Surly Teen at my house also plays guitar (electric) and is in the process of forming a band. He can't ever seem to find anyone serious enough to want to practice on a regular schedule.

He's mostly into "screamo" music. Ugh.

Sounds like he is following in your footsteps. That's great! Where in Morton did they play?

The show was at the Morton American Legion. Yep, it's the screamo stuff. He has been exposed to all sorts of music so perhaps it will begin to influence him later. I toured with ALL sorts of metal bands, and this stuff had MY ears ringing. BUT, As long as he's happy, I'M happy. When I quit Dad's band and started playing rock, he nearly dis-owned me. As a result, i'll support whatever my son wants to play.

Good for you! Let me know if his band ever needs another lead guitarist.

I'll keep that in mind, Lily. The other guys in his band are all 18, so i'd imagine they will be going on to other things after they graduate.

That's awesome, stray. I come from a very musical family, some professionals. I'm not a pro musician myself, but I've had the privilege of playing with some great musicians for many years. My son is only 2, but I can't wait to see if he develops an interest in playing a musical instrument.
