A question about Wikipedia

A friend of our family found his name mentioned in Wikipedia, and it was less than flattering remarks. He asked my opinion about how he could have the remarks removed (they were somewhat defamatory). I went on to Wikipedia and saw there was a little edit box. I removed the defamatory remarks. They appear to be missing now from the article, but is it only on my computer? That just seems too easy. Does anyone understand Wikipedia and can you shine a little light on it please!

My understanding was it is a source that is edited by the community. Were the remarks factual?

wikipedia is open to editing by anyone at any time. they do however keep a history of edits and moderate it.

^^ Hence the reason why you should never base your facts on Wiki.

Anybody can edit any wiki as long as they have not blocked you. I would worry about keeping your name of www.ripoffreport.com This is the place thats nearly impossible to get your name removed from.

You can add, delete and edit. The theory is over time enough people will add, delete, edit and debate the facts and figures to come to a consensus, unlike the debate on I just read on the politics forum about the Right-leaning Fox and the Left-leaning CNN, et al. As tapeworm said, you can review all edits to a page, and there is also a discussion page if you want to argue edit points.

Link If you're referring to this, then it's not rude, it's a fact that somebody posted it on Wikipedia, I don't know or care who, but it's still a fact. If you're not referring to this, then you know two people that have been snubbed on Wikipedia, which is pretty impressive.

That is how everything you have ever known exists.. from centuries of adding and editing history most of the times by word of mouth.. Same concept; different medium.

Crodseth, what I said a few posts up hasn't changed since then. That is not what I was referring to.

Back to the original topic.. if what was written was untrue then I think the best avenue for the best result would of been to contact Wikipedia (they don't like their data being fabricated) If what was said IS true and you or a friend simply doesn't like what is said.. perhaps they shouldn't of done whatever led to the article.. and perhaps this could be a lesson in life opportunity.

Just my 0.02

Ok, well.... This was posted a few months back....this is (or was) an actual wikipedia entry: On October 25, 2002, Meinen Field was renamed Shea Stadium after Tim Shea, a Bradley University alumnus and local crook and businessman contributed the main funds to renovate the facility by cutting corners on deals he made with middle-lower class Peorians. You, Diane, admit to knowing and liking the guy. I DO NOT know him, so I can not attest to his character. All I can attest to is that somebody doesn't like him based on this wikipedia entry. Now you have ANOTHER friend in the same boat?!?!? Maybe your friends need to quit upsetting people. Take back the rude comment and I'll stop.
