I'd prefer to go with the Centers for Disease Control. They see alot more of the result of tick bites than Anybody else.
No matches, oil, soap, polish, jelly, alcohol, .... although that sounds like a damn fine Saturday night if you ask me.

Grab it however you can as close to the skin as possible.
Pull steady and straight out.
If skin comes with it, excellent! Then you know you got the head also. Getting the head is always a good thing.

Keep it for a couple weeks and monitor the bite spot for a bulls-eye rash. A piece of scotch tape folded over it is a great way to contain the little sucker and give you a spot to write some notes - location on body, where you might have picked it up, when it was removed...

If it's already feeding, waiting an hour for a friend to come over to help remove it from a tough spot is not going to make a difference. But making the tick spit a mouth full back into you because it's suffocating sure can make a difference.

Its an old wives tale, that if you don't get the head, it will still live.

If you don't get the head, it dies. And eventually your body spits it out in a big ***** zit. Don't ask me how I know that.
