I called my pharmacist and he said it won't hurt you but it may not help you. I will give it a try and see.

It depends on the med according to my sis (who is a pharmacist). Some stuff is Ok, others are not, some as MsGem said loses its effectiveness. I've got this container of Sylvadine (prescription stuff for burns) and it is old and past date. Still works well.

I would use it and I'll bet it works fine. The average med in our house has been expired since 1995 and they still all work fine!

I am obsessive about expiration dates. Like dairy products, meds have some shelf life past their expiration date. Sometimes they are good for 5-6 months after the date. How ever "years" is not normal. Call your pharmacist. They are a wealth of knowledge!

Long term storage breaks down medication as does time. Different ingredients in the medications chemically break down at different times which is why meds are deemed ineffective or worse, over effective which can play havoc on parts of your body you never meant to touch in your aim to cure. For one, your liver! Why mess with your body with an out of date prescription medication?

Do yourself a favor and toss out all meds older than 6 months especially antibiotics....which you should have finished in the first place!

While you're at it, ladies, toss your bacterial-laden mascara and foundations after 3 months! And toss your tooth brushes out at the same time. It is amazing where bacterial can hide! Just FYI you already knew!
