Yes Diez... Found the tire... it's in the front seat of the car now, thanks to that absolutely adorable man who helped me out, what a wonderful gentleman and way too darn cute. HOT!!!
Getting past that now... Seal's already checked the car out. He says not too bad. Parts will run me about $45 and he will have them ordered and waiting for me at the local auto parts store. His stores out of this area but he can tell them what parts to pull. Locally I have a friend coming out tomorrow to install them for me right there in the parking lot. He just shakes his head at me Jeep, not mad at all just used to me getting into trouble like this. No, Jeep unfortunately I don't do ANYTHING half way. With me it seems it's all or nothing. I know I'm a problem child and I'm glad I don't have to impose on you ALL the time but it's heartwarming to know that I can. Thanks for wanting to be there for me and I'm glad to know you made it safely back in town. See, even without you I do manage to land on my feet. I'm lucky I've got some really great friends who have my back. Rog, as far as the explanation well.. you just need to read Jeeps post because I don't know what the heck happened, just the darn wheel fell off. Jeep... I think the lil car fits my personality. It does it big when it does it.. don't you agree? Remember the engine work you did for me. |

Christi, Christi, Christi.... what in the world are we gonna do with you?
Calamity Jane..., move over. Christi's in town. ;-) I'm joking, of course, and my heart truly does go out to you. It sucks to be "it" all the time. Someone else needs to get tagged and share some of the bad luck. Now how do we arrange that and how do we make sure it's not me that gets tagged? lol (Just had the police here last nite filling out a hit-and-run report. There's a big ol' hole in my front bumper that wasn't there when I came home and parked it. Car was fully intact when I parked it & now lots of the bumper is on the ground underneath the car. Sheesh... that's just wrong to make it home safely and then find out some idiot hit your car and took off!) Glad to hear that you're safe and that the damage is relatively minor! |

Jeez Voice, sorry to rub off on you.
I agree, it does seem to be raining here constantly as far as bad luck. As far as your car, did you find the silver lining? I mean yesterday I found I've got some really solid friends and not exactly where I thought I'd find them. Helped me to ground myself a bit. There's a lot to be said about loyal friends. As much as I've neglected them (forgetting to call them back, not visiting like I should..etc) when I needed them? They were there for me. They've got my back no matter how much of a screw up I might be. That's a good feeling and I'd forgotten what that felt like. I hope all goes well for you Voice... it's good to have you back. Your posts are always well received here. Love, C |

Just a little armchair diagnosis here.
From what I saw, the car is sitting on the brake assembly. There is no wheel hub present. The wheel hub is the part that has the 4 or 5 threaded studs attached, and then the wheel bolts onto the hub and the lug nuts go on those 4 or 5 threaded studs. Here is a picture of what I would have seen if the hub was still there http://www.mydatsunroadster.com/images/large/rear_hu (the hub is usually on the end of an axle, but front wheel drive cars generally don't have a formal axle in back; there's no need for it.) The brake drum goes between the wheel hub and the wheel, and is held on there by the wheel (sort of like a little sandwich) with the lug nuts. Since I did not see a hub assembly, brake drum, and obviously no tire (and you verified that by telling me that the brake drum was attached to the tire) that tells me that the wheel hub (pictured here) http://www.camskill.co.uk/smsimg/551/7462-7339-main- is still attached to the brake drum Generally (I am not going to say "every car on the planet ever made" but I have not seen a car that was not made like this) the wheel hub is held into the spindle assembly by the bearings. When the bearings fail, well, you saw what happened. it *may* be the spindle assembly that caused the bearing to fail, and possibly it has to be replace as a whole unit. However if it was not the bearings, please let me know what it was so I can learn from it, because honestly I am confused. As for fixing this.... I don't know costs offhand, but you're looking at replacing the spindle/hub assembly, as well as re-doing the brakes, and you really should do the left and right at the same time. Your engine is wheezing its last few breaths too. as you reported before, there is a head gasket issue and water is getting into the crankcase. This is a major problem too. I would hate to encourage you to spend $500 to fix this rear wheel issue, and then have your engine give up a few months later. I really think it is time to start looking for something else. It doesn't have to be your dream car -- but something reliable and safe -- for a few hundred dollars, to get you back and forth to work, and in the meantime look for something more your style and "trade up" The beauty about cars that you buy for a few hundred dollars are generally worth that same amount when you sell them a few months later. :-) But. I think it is time to move on from the Shadow. I've been under, around, and within that car, and as fun as it is with the top down and all, it has had a very hard and abused life, and may have given you her final miles. Usually I support repairing instead of disposing and replacing, but this is one of those times where you have to look at it from a point of economics and safety. Anyone have any suggestions or know of a good ride? |

You said the same thing Seal said and now he's having a fit because Louie (the mechanic) is going to replace the bearing thingies and not the breaks.. (they are fighting over the break issue) Seal's afraid I'll get myself killed driving it. But honestly I've had breaks go out before and I'm very cautious. If the breaks are bad he'll notice. Don't you think? Just a couple more months and I'll buy another. Then this one get's scrapped. Promise. |

Oh boy.
Well, if it came down to money.... maybe the mechanic could replace the bearing, and a friend could do the brakes much cheaper? If the mechanic says the brakes are fine, well, then I guess I would trust his word considering most mechanics make their money from the work they DO, not what they do NOT do, if you see what I mean. Like I said a few months ago when we stitched your engine back together: you need to start looking for a new vehicle. This Shadow is neither safe nor reliable. I think you were very lucky in how this episisode turned out, but I can't help but wonder what would have happened if the wheel fell off a few days ago when it was 900 below zero, and you were on that long stretch of road between home and work. Ya know? |
